They are based on the Sarich "Orbital Combustion Process" and use an air compressor to inject fuel presumably after the ports are closed. This results in better fuel economy and less emissions. The early models had the usual teething problems, but anything after about 2001 has proven very reliable. The other major brand of DI 2 stroke (ETEC) uses a voice coil type injector.

I have had a 150 Opti on my 6.2 plate hull for the last 2 years and found it provides acceptable performance and near (but not quite) fuel economy to a four stroke. It's for sale right now, but only because I want to upgrade to Mercury's new Fourstroke 150 - which is only a few Kg heavier than the Opti, but "reportedly" gives similar performance and better fuel economy.

Optimax= 2 stroke performance and 4 stroke economy. as others said they are a DI 2 stroke engine without the 2 stroke smoke .
I have a 200 Opti on the back of my 2002 Trophy, never let me down , I go up to 80 km offshore.
I just got my Grady White, she has a 250 EFI Yammie at the back, I'm taking it off to replace it with a 250 Optimax.

Mate I take it the 250 yam is due for replacement...and your choice is to replace it with an Opti...rather than the 250 yam being say 10 months old and you are so upset with it you are ripping it off the back (in disgust and going with Merc.

The Opti's are a great engine - again, as long as you dont mind the noise, cause they are a brutish chaff cutter, although I like the noise they make.

I love the opti's. I was a Yammy man for 10 years before having twin optis on the back.

Lets just say at full roar, they sound like you are sitting on the wing of a bug smasher at take-off.

I have a 225 opti on the back of my allison and I am very happy with both performance and fuel economy . As for the noise , how else do you tell if their running .

No she is not due for replacement at all mate, she is a freshwater boat, was in a large lake in GA,the engine is like new but she is old tech 2 stroke EFI. No i'm not ripping it off in disgust either, I go a log way offshore and I like to have a new reliable engine on the back, never older than 6 years and I have a 15 hp kicker as well.
Nothing wrong with Yammies either but I prefer 2 strokes for my aplication, not a fan of HPDI or Etec so opti is my only option, this will be my 4 th Opti. If I wanted to 4 banger it would be Verado or Yammie, not a fan of Suzzies.
I don't mind the noise ( i prefer quiet but thats how they are), the GW has a full transom and the engine is on a bracket so you don't get the noise in the boat like you do in the Trophy.
