Re: STOP the "Super Trawler"!
That's a neat looking trawler - I wish they would park it off Mooloolaba just off the back of the Banks on the bottom in say 110m - would be great.
Cheers

Re: STOP the "Super Trawler"!
I have NOT signed it. If Getup! want me to do something, I smell a rat.
I want to know more about what it will fish for, where, and whether there is any threat to the species/area in which it will be fishing. I currently don't know. anyone have the facts? If they are convincing, I will sign, but at the moment it just looks like another Left Whinge beatup, suckers.

Henny Penny, the sky isn't falling. I'm not affiliated with any party or organisation, I just give a f%#k.
There's plenty of information on this available, a simply Google search will NET you heaps.
They're fishing for red bait and mackeral, bait fish basically, that they process on board.
It's a trawler, and a factory.
The ship is reknown for it's abilities to decimate fish stocks, not just it's target species, by by-catch as well including pelagics that feed on these baitfish.
It's fishing off Tasmania's NW coast. I fish down that way whenever the opportunity arised, and it'd be a crying shame to lose that fishery.

Re: STOP the "Super Trawler"!
I am unhappy with this trawler being allowed in our waters but we need to be careful that we get the facts, if the issue of over fishing is of concern then the recent increase of the quota of the very species this trawler will target only a few weeks ago should be the issue, and we need to get accurate information on the status of that fishery, I would rather local Aussie commercial fishers fish this quota then a large foreign company.
But one issue that this does raise however is that currently local trawlers in the area have a limited range as they have to return to port to process fish while they are fresh, a bigger factory ship like this one could effectively fish a much wider range for the same quota, now this can be good and bad, if properly regulated if could in fact ease the threat of local depletion but the by catch issue is one that needs to be addressed.
On the issue of a foreign company having access to our fishing grounds I am dead against, but am undecided on the issue of over exploitation, and if that is something than concerns everyone then the size of the ship is not an issue, but the increase in the quota of the very fish this trawler will target only a few weeks ago from 5,000 tonnes to 10,600 tonnes is.
I do notice a lack of comment by Australian Environment NGOs on this issue which also raises some concern, I feel a deal or set up coming, remembering that one of their aims is to see the division of recreational and commercial fishers, once we are divided then we are an easier target.
More information on the quota increase from the meeting minutes of the South East Management Advisory Committee (South East MAC)as well as some of their concerns with the super trawler by some members, also on this blog update is a reference and link to shipping bills just passed to allow for a ship like this to employ foreign workers, at world pay rates if 2 senior Aussie staff are employed.

Re: STOP the "Super Trawler"!
Sheeesh, ya gotta' wonder who's pulling the strings in Aus atm......should be targetting making it worth while for Aussies to invest in the industry rather than anyone else, IMO.
lol, science, since when has that been involved 'for it's own sake' by politicians....
