    Vhf or uhf radio

I want to put in a marine radio in my boat and also want a hand held one for the jet ski.

I see where u can buy UHF and VHF. Is there a difference and what is recommended in both situations.

I only fish around moreton bay.

    Cheer
    Greg

Put simply, a VHF is for a marine application, it's motored by coast guard and other boaties, whereas a uhf is something you would have in you 4x4.

How you going Greg, the way I understand this is VHF for marine application and UHF for land use applications eg trucks, fourbies and cars. Just wondering why get one installed when you could just use the handheld?

I would be looking at GME or uniden. Also take into consideration of the watts it will transmit. If I was looking I would be in the market for a 5 watt handheld.

If I get both then I won't be caught out and go out with a radio. I looked at bias and Bcf and they got gme and it was 2 watt. I will now look at 5 watt. Are u saying that I need a 5 watt?

    Cheers
    Greg

Hi Greg, I'm not saying that you need the 5 watt. But if I was on a jet ski I would want to know that the handheld that I have has got enough power to transmit a signal if I was in trouble.

If it was me I'd forget about the GME's and Uniden's.
Look for ICOM. Industry leaders in marine VHF.
You'll probably find handhelds are only 1W output and fixed UHF's are 5W maximum.
Try and read the specifications of all the radio's in a view to disbelieve everything they say. Look for RMS output power not peak output power.
Also ask about warranty. Ask if the radio is fixed or simply replaced if something goes wrong.
Ask if there is a service agent in Brisbane.

Marine applications use UHF a hell of a lot lot BUT they do a lot of reeeeeeaaaally long way away offshore type work. UHF marine radios are quite expensive as compared to VHF radios that are well under the $500 mark.

Mate if I was in a jet ski get a hand held VHF - 5 watt is common.
Fixed VHF's will give you better performance as the sets are 25 watts and their antenna is a full wavelength. But a handheld VHF should see you get 3 - 5nm reliably ship to ship and coastguards/ rescue organisations will have elevated antennas so you will get further - far enough I would imagine in most places you would want to go on a jetski. Be aware there are rules using VHF and you are meant to have a license. If you dont at least download the exam so you know how to use it. Raymarine also good. get an IPX 67 or 68 handset (1m submersable.) 5 watts

Finga I think you mean HF for long range communications
    hand held vhf 3 - 5 watt.
    fixed all 25 watt.
    no marine UHF
All measure power the same way as far as I know (PEP). This is RF not electrical power

    Thanks for the corrective post.
You are most definitely quite right. I have no idea what I was thinking but it wasn't right.....Not even close.
