Gearbox problem,maybe?
I have a 1996 175 Mariner 2 stroke.I had it serviced about November last year.Change gearbox oil & so forth.
Today while I went to come home, had engine running while pulling anchor up I was putting in gear then out as normally I do.Then I went to take off,put it into gear then a crunch, knocked it in neutral, then did the same.Put it in reverse was ok,put back in gear then ran fine.
But while driving home tacho was all over the place.Got home flushed motor, when I had started heard a small rattle for a couple seconds then fine.
Some thing not right.
Going to ring guy who serviced to ask him as well for ideas.
Thanks Steve.

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
Going to have a crack here and say your tacho and g/box issues are seperate.
Your tacho maybe a rectifier issue ?
Was the box taken off for an impeller change when the service was done ?, seen it many times where the little selector that sits at the front of those boxes gets bumped out of position.

Box was taken off.Maybe coincidence that tacho played up then.Unsure.

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
Did you check oil colour in the gearbox?
Unlikely the two things are connected as they are from different ends of the engine.
You are dropping the motor into gear quickly and firmly or riding it into gear? Should be positively dropped into gear as there is no synchromesh. Either in or out, nothing in between.

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
Putting into gear quick & firm. When problem happen it was like I was like I had hit a sand bank.Soon As I heard noise I put back to neutral.
I haven't checked gearbox oil.
It was new oil put in,when serviced.
How do you check oil?

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
Just remove the lowest bung only and check the colour of the first few drops that come out, do NOT remove the top bung whilst the lower one is out, you will lose all the oil very quickly to the ground. If it is milky you have water in there.

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
And if you have shiny metal slithers in the oil then you have more trouble.
When the tacho was all over the place, did the engine sound like the revs were changing?

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
Engine was constant rev (by ear),tacho was reading from 2000 to off the gauge.

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
Oil is chocolate brown to black colour.Didn't see any shiny bits.

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
Sounds good so far but now I am running short on remote troubleshooting.
Apart from running it on the muffs.

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
I'd change the oil anyway ovakil and pull the prop, check for fishing line & grease the shaft.
Then keep an eye on the oil for the next few trips.
It's a very easy thing to do for a bit of peace of mind.

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
Ok,took prop off all ok
Went for a small drive today. On the way out all is fine,I stopped & started several times, including reverse.
Anchored up after few hours stared engine up put in gear, motor shook very bad.I was able to put in gear & idle along then as I went to accelerate engine shook as if it wasn't selecting gear.
So I just idled in the short distance.Wife took a small video on her phone will try to upload it.
Thanks Steve

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
u might have a worn out prop shaft bearing dont drive the boat any more untill u pull the gearbox apart if u do and its a prop shaft bearing you could damage the gearbox it could also be a worn clutch

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
Had the mechanic come over, dropped the oil. That was all clean, found out the bush on prop has stuffed up.
Will be sending prop (stainless 4 blade) to Solas to get fixed.
Cheers

Re: Gearbox problem,maybe?
If you had of said the engine was revving up but the boat wasn't accelerating properly then someone would have jumped on the bush in a heartbeat.Engine was constant rev (by ear),tacho was reading from 2000 to off the gauge.
