140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
Hey gang. I am looking at a 6m plate boat with an 8yr old 2 stroke on it and want some feedback on whether it would be viable to go with the 140hp suzuki over the 150hp? There is around 5k difference in price between the two motors so would the 140 with a new prop set up for the boat be a viable option.

150 for sure i reckon, my boat is only 5.3 and the 140 is enough but at 6m id want more.

Re: 140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
A mate has a 5.5 seafarer with a 140 zuke 14x21 prop. I have a 5.4 plate 90 honda vtec, 13 1/4x15 4 blade prop . I can blow the doors of the zuke up to about 50kph, the zuke only has 7 kph more top end than me. IMO go the max hp for the hull. By all means go the zuke but go max hp to the hull and prop it correctly. It depends on how long you intend on keeping the rig for, if a long time, go the extra dosh as the bigger donk wont work as hard so there for should require less juice for the same speed as the smaller donk. Just my 2 bobs worth, Cheers Brad.

What size 2 stroke is coming off?
Plenty of people are going to suggest the 150, but for an extra $5K I am not convinced. Yes, the 150s have a good reputation, but it will be the most expensive 10HP you will ever buy. How much more is the 175, is that an option?
A bit more info on the boat would help, as well as what you intend doing with it - 1000hrs a year / always running fully loaded / want to go flat out all the time etc.
Scott.

Its not just the extra 10hp, its also the extra torque. Usually 1 a 150 will be 6 cyl. You wont regret the extra power but you will regret the lack there of!

I think the 150 suzy is still a 4 cylinder, but yep a bigger block with more torque.

Re: 140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
Theres plenty of 140's pushing 6mtr boats around.........Yes the 150 has more torque but if you get the propping and motor height set properly 140 will be a good set up.......
I have the 140 on my 5mtr platey........a mate has one on his 6mtr platey and at the end of the day we are both getting around 35-37kts wot loaded with 200ltrs and 3 onboard........and thats unusable speed in the ocean.........IMO save 5k and buy some funky new electronics with the savings,Garmin GMI10's are awesome on he Suzuki engines.

Re: 140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
I repowered my old Sportfish (5.8) with a DF140 - great engine and went well. Have the DF150 on my 6m Fisher Maxi and it is in a different league to the DF140. I would definitely go with the 150/175 if you can afford it.

Re: 140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
The 2 stroke coming off is a 150hp johno. The boat is a custom build, one off. If you check out my post on RnR boats you will see it.
As for usage, primarily fishing off 1770. A fair bit of solo but also likely to have 2 or 3 guys on board. Also family stuff. I am not a "WOT all the time guy" so I am more concerned with getting the power down low when needed and optimal cruising speed for economy.
At this stage I don't have a mass for the boat but it sits on a trailer rated to 1999kg on trailer mass.
A 175hp is another 1k to 1.5k more than the 150hp. Would have to check with the designer if it can be fitted.

Re: 140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
Based on what you've got in mind for the boat, I would probably go with the 140 and then work on propping it right for your application. Sure, the better torque from the bigger motor would be nice, but $5k is a big jump, and I bet the 140 can meet your needs.
I've run out of clever stuff to say, so... Umm...

Re: 140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
This thread has the details of prop testing I did with my DF140 for a boat that would probably be the same or slightly heavier that yours, and also the fuel economy I get from my engine. Overall though the 140 does not struggle at all on my boat, it has more than enough power to push the boat fully loaded with gear both good and bad conditions.

Re: 140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
Think of how often you can go even close to WOT offshore? I'd bet 1 in 30 trips maybe. If you're not towing skiers or doing bar work the 140 will be fine, provided the current 150 does the job. If it struggles with the Johno then look at the 150 or maybe the 175. Dunno what the obsession is these days with big HP. It's a mine is bigger than yours thing most of the time, or maybe we're catching Yank-itis

Re: 140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
The 140 is about 2L while the 150 is 2.8L. If you need sources like Darren, I can post links. Lots more torque on the 150, however the 140 is a brilliant engine, just too small for my 6.2m plate hull. Did you check out the Merc 150 also? There are a couple of Suzuki 150s in that Cunningham's auction at Pickles next weekend.
A too small motor will struggle and use extra fuel, better to be slightly over HP than underpowered.

Re: 140 vs 150hp 4 stroke Suzuki
It sounds as though the 140hp is a possibility which is something to keep in mind. Checked out your thread honda, thanks. It does highlight the difference that a prop can make. If you can match the right prop to your hull and motor you can achieve good results.
I am still a while away from taking the plunge so have time to look around and compare. Thanks for the great feedback everyone.
