Any idea who is behind this Timi, and what his credentials are?
Nice initiative, on the face of it......

Re: We Fish Blog - if you want to know how we are being screwed, and want to fight
Hi there all, I started the blog yesterday, having a look at the blog stats this morning ausfish has accounted for the second largest referring url’s after facebook, so it’s great that so many are interested.
I got involved behind the scenes of all this political fishing stuff since the Mako ban, I was also involved in helping running the wefish facebook site, I have spent some time digging around and have pages and pages of information, scientific studies that show the opposite to what some claim as well as bunch of other stuff that I thought others would find interesting, and I thought should know. The blog seamed the best format to be able to share that information with those interested, without annoying those that are not, by posting this stuff on forums.
The idea of the blog is to be an information site that others can use to share whatever they want without having the usual politics of fishing involved, I will try and keep the blog to just facts and keep the opinions to myself, but sometimes this can be a little hard, as I am sure you would understand.
You might ask why! Well apart from the fact that I see a lot of this stuff restricting what I enjoy doing, ie fishing, I also have a bigger concern being that all these measures offers very little protection to ensure my kids and their kids can also enjoy what we all enjoy today. Most recreational anglers would not have a problem with a closed season or marine park if it was shown that a species either targeted or not, needed it and that these measures would help its health and numbers, but what we have happening here is a long way from that.
This weekend I will be asking for support from members of the fishing industry in the form of a plug and placing a link on the blog to show their support.
If anyone has specific question please ask and I will do my best to answer them.
Cheers Daniel Stanilovic

Re: We Fish Blog - if you want to know how we are being screwed, and want to fight
It varies and with their maps it’s a little hard to tell exactly what areas they have included, as reefs are not marked on the map, but basically they have removed certain types of commercial fishing from some areas, and also created no fishing areas, for both commercial and recreational in other areas. Although there are fewer areas closed off to recreational anglers then there was in the original draft.
With the Coral Sea
Longline and bottom trawling have been banned in about two thirds of the Coral Sea. Three-quarters of the area is protected from long-line fishing and the majority of the marine reserve is protected from trawling. Osprey Reef, Shark, Vema, Bougainville and Marion Reefs are no fishing at all, All up 40% of the Coral Sea reef area has been added to the no-take area.
But the big problem is that while they have concentrated on anglers they have totally ignored the things that threaten the area today, in the last 8 months we have had 2 ships that lost power and almost drifted onto shallow reefs, it was just pure luck that they didn’t, also ship noise and sonar is now accepted as one of the reasons whales beach themselves, as well as effecting there communication and breeding, researchers say that juvenile black marlin can be found inside the GBR lagoon year round, indicating that it is a prime nursery area, an area that is being decimated by what we do on land. So while they pretend that they have achieved protection in the Coral Sea, they have done very little in that aspect.

I would like to know how just one bloke thinks he's going to make a difference when these different groups together had trouble. Ecofishers, Sunfish, the Charter mob and the RRFF group?

Re: We Fish Blog - if you want to know how we are being screwed, and want to fight
We all have a choice we can sit back and let others do the work or we can try and make a difference, at the end of the day all I expect is for me to be able to look in the mirror and know I did what I could.
Very shortly there will be a 60 day consultation period after the Government Gazettes the final draft. This will be our last chance to have a say, on the management plans. The idea of the blog is not to tell anyone what to say or think but to try and provide the information with links for anyone that is interested, and to assist those wishing to write a letter to the relevant people when the time comes.
Don’t underestimate the power of your voice, the reversal of the Mako ban is an example of what can be achieved if enough individuals take the time to get involved.

wags no offence but one bloke in the face of politicians is better than 1000 blokes on ausfish doing nothing.
