Advise needed - Components for rod building weekend
Hello All, I was wondering if I could get some input on the following components for a spinning rod matched to a TSS4. The rod will primarily be used spinning off the beach for tailor ect. I found the recipe, by Gary Howard, and am not sure if the components are still current or if there are better options. I am planning on taking it all to the rod building weekend in July and getting some expert advice on putting it all together.
Would Pac bay components stack up against the fuji gear, guides and reel seat?
Blank – fsu 4120g
Butt - 14” x 1” Eva
Winch - FUJI FPSD 32 (fixed hood up)
Foregrip - 10” x 1” EVA
Cap - BC 1 1/4”
Tip - FUJI BULT 10 / 3.6
Guides - FUJI BSVLG
10 - 175mm
12 - 190mm
16 - 210mm
20 - 250mm
FUJI BHVLG 25 M - 300mm
Stripper - FUJI BHVLG 40 - 455mm
Thanks in advance
Iain

Re: Advise needed - Components for rod building weekend
I was fairly sure after reading other gurus opinions that would be the case, i asked because two suppliers said they couldnt source the reel seat but offered a pac bay reel seat as a solution.

Further, Hyperlon grips rather than EVA......... or for the surf... maybe go cork ?
Fuji for the rest and Pac bay or ALPS reel seats.

Re: Advise needed - Components for rod building weekend
Thanks Pedro, i will check out the alps.
Just when i think i am completely bewildered with the size, shape, colour, brand of the reel seats and guide alternatives it then gets worse, different grips too! I will have to increase the amount of time i spend on Ausfish if i am going to be ready for the rbw in July.
Thanks for the input Phill, it would be great to have cork grips, i did consider that but i discounted the idea (due to lack of knowledge). Will add that to the list of things to find out about. Are cork grips much harder to use than the hypalon when building the rod?
Thanks again.

Is the reel seat size right?
A 32mm seat is pretty big especially for a TSS4.
I have some FPS-D24's here believe it or not.

Re: Advise needed - Components for rod building weekend
Alfred/Scott, I just copied the recipe straight out of a magazine, i am not sure of anything about the components to be honest. These are the specs for the blank. It does seem strange, if the blank is 33.4mm at the butt 32mm at the reel seat isn't much of a drop in diameter. So realistically i should buy the blank and actually measure the diameter around where i think the reel seat will end up and go from there, as opposed to buying all the components and hoping they fit?
MODEL RATING ACTION LENGTH TIP BUTT WEIGHT
(cm) (mm) (mm)(gms)
FSU 4120G 4-8 kg FAST 305 2.9 33.4 295
Thanks

Re: Advise needed - Components for rod building weekend
If she's 33 odd mm at the bottom then you'll need a 32.
Anything smaller simply not fit.
have you got something long enough to spin it on?
Cheers then

Finga/Alfred/Scott/Me,
I think so, even if i can't spin a rod effectively on that weekend i think i will still be well advanced of my current knowledge level, just by watching and listening to other rod builders chat.
