Re: Rec Fish Survey results are in
Hi
Paddles I like your idea of an online participation where you open an account and submit data. That is good. I cannot see how accurate these results being as who knows how many actual fisho's did not participate in the survey compared to non fisho's. There could be many more that what is forecast and who didn't take part.
I think an online data base where you report your catch, including any fish released, where it was caught etc, etc would be a good start to gathering much needed info. By doing this as Commercial fisho's do then decisions in protecting our resources could be better made.
the down side is people jumping on and supplying fake info would be my concern and that could happen. Just my thoughts.
Question-- Recently asked at Spinnaker on easter long weekend what our catch was. Where does this info go.

Re: Rec Fish Survey results are in
I have received information from Fisheries Queensland.
We are trying to work with a system that will allow FQ to participate on Ausfish without over stepping Govt guidelines and protocols.
This is part of that info and I thank FQ for their response.
The survey is the latest in a series that have been conducted since 1996. They are designed by Lawrie West who has designed the framework for most (if not all) rec fishing surveys throughout the country. This gives some consistency in the methodology and therefore some ability to compare results across states …The National Survey in 2000 was based on the same model. It's my understanding that the methodology is approved by ABARES….certainly a number of the recreational fishing groups use this data to support their arguments.
There are a number of reasons why the participation rates are down across some age groups and up in others…Changing population demographics, aging populations, competing interests, declining interest in outdoor activities in the young, changing work patterns etc… The survey is conducted every 4/5 years to provide a snapshot of recreational fishing in Qld.
Surveying tourists in the phone survey is not achievable….this survey is about Qld residents and it is conducted on those residents with a publicly listed phone… We have some plans for future surveys that will provide data on tourist activities but that is a way off…In the interim there are a number of other agencies conducting surveys around the State that may provide some additional answers...(e.g. Sunfish is looking to conduct an economic value survey in Qld..)

Hi Mrs Ronnie H.
This link might answer your question, if it was a Fisheries Qld employee asking you questions.

Re: Rec Fish Survey results are in
One other "big" variable to add to the "phone survey" which will negate the results is the fact that the vast majority of people have added their phone numbers to the "do not call register", therefore the results are completly questionable as it reduces the amount of participants significantly.

Re: Rec Fish Survey results are in
OK. I can take those results as being fairly representative of our poulation at the moment. I do think that people are turning away from fishing as a recreational activity. I think hunting would be in an even greater decline. The reasons are many and it would be great to see the State Government spend some time and money looking into ways to reverse this trend
I think the first thing is to look at the complexity of our current rules and regulations. It would be a nightmare trying to work out where to fish and what you are allowed to keep if you are new to the sport
So many fish..... so little time
