Question Suzuki 140 oil level ??

Whenever I have checked my engine oil level it’s always been well above the top dip stick marker and I have always thought it was over filled when serviced. So when A changed the oil myself, I took particular attention on how much oil to put in “5.5 litres according to the manual”. Upon checking (with motor vertical) its way above the top dip stick maker so what’s the go....

Check it again after it has been started, once the oil filter fills with oil it will come down a bit. You might also find that not ALL the old oil that was in the engine has drained out fully prior to refilling.

I did check it after running the motor, and all the old oil was drained out just as the manual showed

Best not to hold the dip stick upside down when you're reading it.

My DF 70 lost 200 hours between services They have a knack those Zuks..

Whats wrong with that, adds to the resale value. Would not mind losing a few hours of mine.

there could be a couple of reasons for your "problem" some have been covered here, like the engine can retain quite a lot of oil in little nooks and crannies, and the filter will also hold quite a bit (unless it was replaced of course) and old time "mechanic" I used to know would always start the motor for a jiffy with the filter off and the sump plug removed, he reckoned it was the only way to get all the old contaminated oil out! good or bad, or even stupid is anyones guess, but I have seen him do it, and there was a lot of oil that drained out the sump drain after it. I gues there is also a really, really slim chance your dipstick is marked wrong, how is anyones guess, but funny things happen sometimes. We are to assume this only happens after an oil change, and your motor is NOT "making oil" as it is termed, as this is a very real and reasonably common problem that needs to be checked.

Re: Suzuki 140 oil level ??

The term "making oil" what is this ??Iis this caused by fuel getting into the oil ????. This is not the case here as the oil level showed high straight after an oil change. This was also the case after the motor was serviced by a suzi mechanic 8 months ago. I never did get to ask the mechanic why the oil level was so high, and the motor ran fine so I just forgot about it, until I serviced it a couple of weeks ago. The mechanic is away overseas at present, so I posted here to see if any other suzi owners are experiencing the same problem.

yep, making oil is pretty common in 4 strokes, the main causes are running too slow for long periods without getting the motor up to higher RPM and thermostats too cold/not working, there is a couple of other problems too like leaking fuel pumps, but that is not so common. Of course this is completely different to having too much oil that is milky coloured, now that's a drama, but thankfully, also not too common, well not yet in certain brands and HP.

You could drain off the excess after filling each time and save it up for a free oil change!

The motor is running fine been out on one trip since the oil change. however I might actually drain all the oil, kick the motor over a few times and then see how much extra comes out. Then slowly add oil and see how much it takes to get a correct reading on the dip stick, and compare that with the manual.

Re: Suzuki 140 oil level ??

    Hi,
    Tropicrows,

Yep, my 140 has had all its services (just over 5 years old), and after every service, I have checked the engine oil and it is ALWAYS well above the mark on the dipstick. It has always had new filters with the oil change. I changed it once myself after a workshop service, to see what was going on. I removed the filter, and let it drain overnight. There was definitely no oil left in the engine. I refilled it with the correct amount according to the manual, and after running and checking, found that it was still miles above the mark on the stick. I don't know what goes, but it does not seem to cause problems.

    Dave.
