Gundi Lagoon
Today I was scanning through a QLD Dams & Waterways book and came across a small section about fishing the Surat Weir & Balonne River area. The information included a few references to Gundi Lagoon.
There wasn't much information about it though apart from a sentence or two saying it was a great location for using lures. Apparently a small tinnie is essential to fish the lagoon effectively, especially when casting lures. The description caught my attention.
The write-up also mentioned something about Youngerman Creek either flowing into it or somehow associated with the lagoon. But when I Googled Youngerman Creek it came up with zilch..!
I tried some Google searches for Gundi Lagoon but there was just a few mentions relating to a list of fish stocking clubs but no specific information about the lagoon itself. My Ausfish search didn't turn up anything much and I tried to Google Earth it but no success.
So, has anyone out there ever heard of Gundi Lagoon?
Has anyone on the forum actually fished there or know someone who has?
And, exactly where is it in relation to Surat Weir?
As my curiosity has been kindled, any info would be a bonus. Like, how easy is it to get to? Can you camp there? (I'll bet its a mozzie paradise?)

Re: Gundi Lagoon
Mate, I'm probably way off track here, but many years ago there was a lagoon/large waterhole on the NSW side of the border near Goondiwindi, along the Boomi road I think.
It sticks in my mind because in those times we used to legally drink at the Boggabilla pub with a bloke or two from the mission at Toomelah and there was no way these blokes would go any where near the place. Can't remember now what the local name for the place was. It was probably fed from the Macintyre river.
Now, the place I'm talking about is really nowhere near the places that you mentioned, it's just that sometimes the local spelling for Goondiwindi is 'Gundi" or "Goondi".
Coincidence maybe?

I think too that there's is a certain amount of 'local knowledge' associated with these places.
I don't blame people for wanting to be a bit 'hush-hush' when to comes to revealing prime local fishing spots.
Oh well, once I start frequenting those freshwater vicinities on a regular I'm sure I'll become more savvy about name places & where to go etc.

Re: Gundi Lagoon
Wamjam has done a bit of fishing in the general area. From Inverell and all points N,S,E and W.
He might be able to throw a bit of light on the subject.
Oh, how I wish i could get those times back again. In 1963, if the planets had lined up, and other things, I was staring down the barrel of a hand me down gift of a Purdey shotgun from a gentleman who wanted me to marry one of his daughters. He showed it to me often. It had silver inlays and inscribing where it locked and would now be over 100 years old. He used to tell me it was tailor made for his father, as they used to do in those days. Unfortunately, things got stuffed up.
But I digress. Ah well, not to worry. I wander off as I get older.

Re: Gundi Lagoon
I'll most likely touch base with Rossco once I get to Roma. I'm sure he has plenty of local knowledge about those places.
The information I read about Gundi Lagoon was in the same section as Surat so I reckon it is in those parts.

Re: Gundi Lagoon
I will give you the run down on Gundi's and a few other places when you get to Roma PNG1M, it is about 20km south of Surat on the St George road, not clear enough for lures atm.
Cheers rossco
