    Tide time lag richmond

Tonight I fished the rockwall that runs from the southern ferry approach and heads south (essentially the road from south ballina to Wardell) the tide chart said low at 8pm, the tide only turned at about 1045???? Why the nearly 3 hour time difference????? I haven't fished here b4 so I was very shocked at the big difference, all the charts said they had been adjusted for dl savings too. I have fished the upper emigrant b4 and it is only about 2 hours lag???? What am I missing?

Was it a big tide that night?

I'm not familiar with the Richmond, but we fish the Clarence a fair bit and I've found that you might as well throw the tide times out sometimes. A local told me that it takes about five hours for the high at the mouth of the Clarence to reach Grafton, while at the same time, you got the previous high coming back from Grafton.

The Richmond is a very big river like the Clarence so the conditions are probably much the same to a certain extent. It's easy to get caught if you want to fish the beach or say the Bluff, where the tides are totally different from the river.

He always works on what he calls slack water.

Spot on TOL. It can also depend on how much fresh water is still trying to make it's way to sea after rain. I can usually bank on slack water at the Clarence mouth being about two hours later than the tide charts tell you. Note that by slack water I mean when the water stops flowing one way and starts flowing the other - this is different from the time when the water reaches its lowest (or highest) level for that tide. I've never quite worked out how the water level can begin to rise after a low tide while the river is still running out quite strongly, but it does!!!
