What type of fish is this?
Hi Ausfish,
I was fishing my local rivers last weekend (Northern Gold Coast > http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=-27...,0.127029&z=13) and caught http://flic.kr/p/9eRctY in my cast net, anyone know what type of fish it is?
I have been told possibly a Bullrout? however of the 2 Bullrouts i've seen before, it looks somewhat different.
It was approx. 15cm in length and was caught near weed after quite a few weeks of rain.
Thoughts?
PS. This fish was released alive safe and well, much to the dismay of the neighbouring fish no doubt

Looks like a freshwater bullrout (aka the freshwater stonefish).

Fortescue for sure mate. I use to catch lots of these guys in my cast net when I was younger. Bullrouts tend to be in freshwater mostly and actually get sold in aquarium shops.
You don't want to get stabbed by one let me tell you!! the pain inflected is worse than any catfish or happy moments I have been done by before..
cheers
Brandon...
