Re: Epirb advice
your right about the UIN. I'm witing see what happens when the number of boat resales take place in the next few years and EPIRB's and going with the boat with the old owner's details.
Just imagine the 2am phone calls from AMSA to the"owner" asking if they are alright in bed!!!!..
MESSAGE HERE IS: remember to transfer your details to the new owner when selling the boat.

Re: Epirb advice
I'll say it again slowly
If manufacturers didn't know the number required they are thick as bricks.
They knew how many they manufactured, they knew when the batteries ran out. They knew the date of final changeover - ie deadline and had some notice with earlier stste legislated deadlines
If they wanted to keep market share they had to make at least that many - seems they didn't although I am a sceptic on the size waiting list quoted and 6 months lead times quoted.
They had exact numbers of commercial in survey vessels and aircraft do that would have narrowed it down. Could have looked at total vessels registered and taken all those above 6.5m as at max number. Rescue organisations know how many individual vessels they log on and off.
Guess they were thick, just plain lazy or want to milk the hell out of it is my thought.
Extra stock on hand at a small production cost with a 12 month shelf life shouldn't have that hard to understand.
AMSA will supply total numbers registered and which brands isn't relevant
So whats the number going to be
20000
35000
70000
120000
160000

"6. It would be extremely inappropriate of AMSA or anybody in such authority to even be discussing numbers of makes/models that have been registered"
Sorry Sat Nav I would not ask nor would I expect AMSA to give me make and model numbers I only meant EPIRB numbers. I don't mean to make it sound like AMSA are leaking information or something.
Sorry I will not ask if it could cause problems.

Re: Epirb advice
In the old system AMSA only had to request the total sold units that would have in date batteries from all ( like 5) major distributers and do a tally on the basis that it was for national safety.
Maybe they did that and came up with 160000 number?
That would mean companies gave big numbers for some reason????

Re: Epirb advice
Satnav,
Please tell the whole story. EPIRBs are not mandatory for recreational boats in the US. That cuts several million out of the equation.
I have some 2002 figures here:

Re: Epirb advice
1. No there is no real mandatory carriage of EPIRBS in the US apart from the mandated requirement they be 406’s since Jan 2007
2. Boaty numbers in Australia is just a drop in the ocean compared to the US
3. Boaties in the US generally see a need for EPIRBS without the whinging and bitching that has gone on in Australia. Many in the US carry several.
4. The Australian market is still only minor compared to other parts of the world including the US.
5. Question still remains: Where and why did Australia fail?

Re: Epirb advice
SATNAV,
Perhaps it is good that there is a 406 shortage. This will mean less people at the Banks or Tempest with subsequently less fishing pressure on these areas. I have my 406, purchased in 2007, so I will be out & about when the weather lets me. Do not stress about it. It is not your problem.
If you want to do something constructive, attend the SOBA rally next Saturday as the dimwit Labor politicians will do anything to get green votes so they can keep their noses in the trough, & if this means closures everywhere they will do it.
BTW, ANNA is "chew your arm off FUGLY".![]()

Re: Epirb advice
1. Yes perhaps it is? Result of people's slack attitudes which might be good in your respect.
2. Obviously you were/are one of the people who actually understand
3. Sounds like time to sort out the political interference and the opportunity is now.
