Navara Towing Capacities

Hey Guys,

I'm getting conflicting stories from different websites.

Can anyone tell me the facts on towing weight allowed with these trucks?

2002 Navara Petrol
2002 Diesel

2003 Petrol
2003 diesel

2004 Petrol
2004 diesel

2005 petrol
2005 diesel

I need to legally tow 2.8 T, but have been told the 02/03/04 is only rated to 2T?

Was the 2.8T capacity introduced in 05 or is this bs?

My budget will be strecthed for an 05, and may even see me having to get an older Patrol, which I don't want.

Can anyone give me any advice on the Petrol variations of these cars also for towing purposes? What sort of economy can one expect?

My 2005 STR Dual Cab is rated at 2800kg. The 2005 DX Dual cab at 3000kg. earlier models i'm not sure.

My 2004 ST-R Diesel was rated at 2800. It got drowned (and written off) in flash floods at Birdsville so I have just replaced it with a 2006 ST-R. It has the same tow rating as the 2004. It will be getting a snorkel.

I understood some of the earlier ones were rated to 3000 and they dropped it to 2800 at some point, obviously pre 2004.

When looking at the market for a used ST-R there was not a lot of price difference between 2004 and 2006 models.

Thanks Guys,

A couple of websites told me all pre 05 had a rating of only 2T.

I now believe that to be a furfy, and have been told they are all rated to 3T pre 05, and 2.8T after that.

Maybe I should never veer away from the good old trusty Ausfish!

Hey Phil,

Thank you immensely for your research.

Redbook is the website that stuffed me up.

Some other websites tell me 3T, people tell me 3T, and the vehicle i'm looking at has a 3T towbar. I havn't looked myself, but apparently nowhere in the owners manual does it actually say a towing capacity.

I can't grab it till i'm 100% certain.

I am sure the 2002 is 3 ton for the diesel. Mine has the 3 ton tow bar.

I am now unsure about the capacity, but maybe with the 2.5 common rail motors, they reduced the capacity. ?

Mind you, be AWARE, that towing in 5th gear is NOT recommended. 5th is an overdrive and therefore will suffer ( input shaft ) " loading "..... " stress ".

Tow ok on flat ground but I would recommend once you get down to 2500 rpm in 5th, go back to 4th.

Only real way to check is email a dealer....... ?

My o4' dx navara 3.0 ltr diesel was rated at 3 tonnes. They later dropped it to 2.8 tonnes. Some of the 04 models were putting conrods through the blocks and I believe this had something to do with the drop in tow weight.

When looking at a second hand navara, get the compliance details off the plate and call nissan. They will tell you what it can tow. The dx and stx (d22) navaras now have the common rail 2.5 ltr diesel fitted (Same motor as the d40 or larger model) . This was due to euro emissions and not any particular mechanical issues. Hope this helps.

As a footnote, it should be added that nissan's tow ratings only apply with genuine nissan towbars fitted. Beware of aftermarket equipment when buying second hand. It will void your towing capacity and your insurance if it doesn't meet nissans requirements!
