Re: fishing thailand
don't bother with land based fishing unless you pay at a stocked impountment.
offshore, good chance you will get ripped off because it is very hard to work out if your charter operator is any good till you get out on the water.

I was in Thailand in november. Weather was average, but they will go out no matter what... There is a charter which looked ok, but he didnt operate with the bad weather, as it was a night charter.. HOwever, you might as well just book with anyone cause i would say they are all as dodgy as each other![]()
We just trolled around for half a day and picked up 6 tuna, mac tuna etc... the bottom bashing was a joke.... try getting your line tyo the bottom with a raging current and a pea sinker!!
If you do manage to get your hands on some tuna, be sure to take them back with you...We took ours ( about 4 kg worth) back, and found an absolutely awesome sushi place on the corner ( opposite the tiger bar), with the intention of slapping it on the bbq and giving them the other one..
we came back 30 mins later to find both sliced up in different shapes and sizes..
They cooked the tuna about 5 different ways, did 6 different types of sushimi and sushi, and it was the best meal i have ever had!! they even cooked the fish egg for us.. beautiful...
The place has about 5 sushi chefs working in it, and is only small.. They charged 500 baht, which is only about 15 bucks!!
You should be able to knock the charters down to about 800 - 1000 baht ( 20 -30 bucks) for the day.. so even if you catch 1 tuna and take it to the sushi place, it will be the best meal you have ever had.
cheers rob

yeah it depends on the time of year that you go to what u can catch. plus depending on what hotel ur staying at they should be able to reccomend a charter. book when your over there. there are plenty of little booths on the streets with pamphlets so just check that out. i was at patong beach. they had plenty of fishing advertised. the charter i went out on we caught about 40-50 mack tuna very small. i wasnt real happy with it but the other tourists liked it lol. so yeah good luck to you mate it is a magical place. i recomend the cave kayaking as well.

Re: fishing thailand
We stayed all over thailand, but fishing was done off phuket. I cant remember the name of the place we stayed in phuket, but it was down the same alley as the sushi joint... in between 2 massage palours.. butu it was almost new, and rates were 900 baht per night.. air con, feather down doona, plush bathrrom etc... awesome price..... but come 2 Novemeber the rice doubled!
I wouldn't bother taking your own rod.... some bugger will probably run off with it.

Re: fishing thailand
Just a side note...... I went on a trip around the bay in this huge bloody motorised canoe (6 cyl nissan diesel truck motor) with about 40 other tourists of mixed ethnicities, the BOAT? had about 5 inches freeboardbut luckily it was pretty millpondish..... we did the cave thing... James Bond Island (the boat nearly got machine gunned by an overzealous fee collecting ranger/soldier.... no crap)
anyway we pulled up at this fishing village stuck out in the middle of the bay on stilts and they served up all this seafood... prawns and baitfish..... a bit of limp salad and "bottled" water... i didnt drink it...... the seals were broken.... no beers coz it was muslim... before i had eaten anything i needed to go the loo and after finding it hidden away I found i was looking through a dunnyhole straight into the keeper pens of fish
...... the keeper nets surround the village perimeter.... so what ever goes in the water feeds the fish.....blech... my bride and I didnt partake in the local fare at this establishment....... and no friggn beer
....sheesh
But hey .... the best holiday was had by both of us...... btw we couldnt get a fishing charter at the time as a few had been hit by pirates and they werent allowed out... but hey man... don't let that put you off...hahahha
