Fishing boat sinks behind Green Is (Cairns) last night
On the news tonight, 2 blokes, 1 almost brand spanking new 70k 6m+ plate boat sinks on anchor, apparently the boat somehow caught on the anchor rope and the next wave/swell turned it over.
Blokes hung to the upturned hull for 10h till daylight, some of their flares didn't work, upon daylight they found the epirb under hull, set it off, boat sank (i assume nose up) and they were rescued.
The 'message' that is so important in news today was these blokes were complaining about the cost of safety equipment, I agree good safety equipment is too expensive for what it is. But behind them was their brand spanking 1 month old but just been sunk 70k rig! the mesage missed the mark
.
Looked like an AMM, but dunno for sure.

sucks to be them but the few dollars extra for safty gear is very worth it. And maybe next time they will try taking a course on how to use a anchore properly.

Some people whinge about the cost of safety gear until they need it, then alls good. I bet those blokes weren,t whinging when they found the epirb. For what they do $480 is so cheap.

I dont understand when reading about these types of incidents, how often the boats sink when turned over. Shouldnt they have some sort of positive floatation? Part of the reason why I opted for a stabicraft, I dont fancy being stuck in the ocean without even an upturned hull to cling onto.

How can a boat just "catch on the anchor rope" to the point where it rolls?
Maybe they doing the drive off with a float to pull the anchor and had the rope tied off on the stern?
You would think you would need to try pretty hard to sink a 6m plate boat.

Yeah there's got to be more to the story you'd reckon. Just goes to show, some things aren't worth skimping on. When you need it to work its gotta work regardless of how much it cost. The ocean is such an unforgiving environment.
