hey guys,

i am looking for an entry level fly combo ,
i will use it mainly chasing trout in nz but wouldnt mind being able to catch a bass or two on it.

i found these loomis combos,
does anyone know what they are like?

Hi Yella,

Go the Innovator Distance rod and reel mate.......you will not be disappointed at all.

Bloody nice pieces of gear and more than enough rod for most things you are intending it for.

You can find lots of writeups on Fly gear on Flylife forums.

The guys there are the fly fishing equivalent of this site.

Hi YH,
As Tunaticer said the invator is a great rod ,with plenty of grunt yet a slow enough action to present flys softly when needed . I started out with a loomis combo (pescado) and although a great rod the reel leaves a lot to be desired , you can pretty much say your getting a free reel and line with your rod . On the other hand the inovator may not have the graphite quality as the pescado (GL2 equivilent) but with the Scientific Anglers LA reel with backing and line , you have got the moneys value right threre , at least you will have a bit of drag if you need it as opposed to the danika reel that comes with the loomis kits . I fished with mate today for Bass and he had the same inovator combo you have the link to , and for the price you can't beat that.
If you want more info based around tropical species you might want to google an Australian Saltwater Flyfishing site , I hav egot one in mind but it seems to get picked up by the spam filter on here (fair enough rules is rules )

I might add the Loomis arn't really an entry level compeditor in flyrods., when you have brands like inovator and to some extent TFO putting out excelent quality rods in that price range . I have split of 6 loomis fly rods and I have upgraded everyone to GLX , I think that at that level of graphite thats where Loomis excells, as with most other high end brands ( Sage , Scott ect.), but buying a rod in that price range can also be tricky if not more so than the high end as you could put yourself off the game forever if you purchase a broomstick that won't load with the line .I would suggest buying from someone who sells a range of rods and some who can cast a whole line in front of you with the rod you are about to buy , I see heaps of guys come into the club frustrated with their casting because they bought "clearance stock" from a major tackle chain , it was probaly sold with the best intentions but a lck of knowledge was clearly passed on.
You will do fine with the inovator
On the sunshine coast Gavin Platz at tie n fly sells them and loomis if you can get there I am sure Gav can explain the difference in detail

You might want to try Duncan or Lowy at fishead , that would be your best bet if you can't get to see Gavin , its just that Gavin only sells Flyfishing gear so your always going to get someone who fishes with the gear . But if you ask for Lowy or Duncan they should point you in the right direction
