Thread: Reel spare parts??

    Reel spare parts??

Due to this morning's woeful trip to Victoria Point I need to get my reel fixed.
It's a Quantum Energy E2-4 spincast.(egg-beater) The level wind cog kind of imploded after about 15 casts and I had to pack up an come home as I had only taken one rod/reel with me
Is there any tackle shops around Brisbane/SEQ who stock a range of spares, not necessarily Quantum brand that I may-be able to go and compare sizings of cogs with get one to replace this one.
I have emailled Q int he USA to see what they say but won't hold my breath for a reply.
The reel has served me well for 6 or so years and still has lots of fish left to catch for me so I don't want to put it out to pasture just yet.
    ANy help gratefully accepted.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Re: Reel spare parts??

    Hi Chris,
I am a sales rep in the tackle business. The Quantum brand has gone through numerous Australian agents in recent years. Alvey Reels about 10-12years ago (no spare parts left) and L Wilson & Co. had it for quite a while after that. It kind of dissapeared for a while but I am sure another Australian importer picked it up recently. If you drop it off to the Tackle Warehouse at Coorparoo their reel repairer is very good with Quantum as he bought all the old parts off Alvey when they ditched them. At least he may have an answer - be it or

    Re: Reel spare parts??

    Thanks Rob.
They are actually who I bought it off all those years ago. I thought about them and the reel section but just thought I would ask first to save any embarresment on asking.
I am over that way every day for my daughter's school so I will drop in tomorrow and sound him out and hopefully geta part and repair it asap. I wonder if he has any spare spools too as I want to spool up with a new line in 2 classes.
I was getting a little dismayed and thinking I'd just get a few more Alveys and be done at that....a 4 or 4&12'' or a 5'' and build a couple more rods to suit light lines.

    Re: Reel spare parts??

I would stick to an Alvey if it was me - but it would be good for you if you can get the part. I should mention that Alvey only had very few models when their repairer got those parts. That was along time ago so who knows how many bits & pieces he has now...

Personally I think that for bait fishing you can't beat the Alvey system and yep you wouldn't have had to come home early... tough as nails

    Goodluck.

    Re: Reel spare parts??

    Hi 4x4 frog,
If you have no luck at the Tackle Warehouse give Ray Carter at Maroochydore a ring on 54436428. He collects and repairs reels and has literally thousands of complete and bits and pieces of reels and has been extremely helpful to me when looking for bits and pieces for my Mtchell and Daiwa reels that no longer have spare parts available. You've prompted me to give him a plug on this site as I'm sure many of us have reels we'd like to use but have broken a bail spring or main gear and can no longer use them. Hope you have some luck with yours.
    regards Knackers

    Thanks Knackers.
I will give him a try if I can't get any satisfaction from the TW. Good info too, I am sure there will be more than one good story form this.
I lived in Maroochydore for a few years back in the mid/late 80's but don't know that name, even though I was closely involved inthe piscatorial goings on of the s/coast through my boss who was heavily into the SCGFC.
    Cheers and thanks again.

    Re: Reel spare parts??

I don't think there's a problem with Alvey parts. I've bought a number of bits from the Tackle Warehouse recently and they had most of them right there in stock. Don't normally need much for the reliable Alvey but I'm doing up a couple of old ones.

Not sure about parts for your Quantum though.

    Chris.

    Re: Reel spare parts??

I have never needed to replace anything on Alveys reels either. I broke an old 5'' bakelite one as a kid though but you get that! > I still have an old Surf Champ 650 Star drag that was my fathers and it would be 40 years old now I guess and it is still perfect and I actually just bought another spool for it so as I can have 2 heavier line classes on the drag reel and use my non-drag 650 for light beach work
Looking at getting a couple of 4'' alveys and matching them to short rods for the kids to use and for my spinning/casting as well. That will also mean when the kids drop them on the sand they will only have to wash them out and be away again.

    Re: Reel spare parts??

    Trip to recommended supplier fruitless.
I will have to give ol' mate up the coast a call then I have no idea where to from there. I hope he can help but don't hold alot of hope.
It really pisses you off, I bought the reel because it was the best I could find for the money a few years back and I still haven't found much under $100 in a small baitcaster that is as well balanced. Now because of the failure of a probably $2 part the reel is useless. Bet if they let me loose in the Quantum factory in the uSA I could find a gear the same size as this one. I don't believe that a company would re-tool absolutly everything for each new reel when they are so similar in spec and size through each range. If car manufacturers did this with evey vehicle they'd be broke in a week.
All I have to do is get to the right person in the US and I will probably have a gear to suit but finding this person may-be the hard part. Wish me luck and if I don't find a part I am back to the sidecasts only, as at least they are 100% reliable.
I checked and oiled this reel just before the xmas holidays and it was all in one piece then.

If you can't get the replacement part anywhere and you REALLY want to fix the reel, try an engineering shop that specialises in small jobs.

They may be able to built one for you.

    Try contacting www.mikesreelrepair.com
These guys are in Canada, but you could email them re the part you require.
They have heaps of Quantum/Zebco/Lews parts, you could get lucky.
Also an excellent free access library of reel schematics.
    Cheers and good luck!

    Re: Reel spare parts??

    Hey guys,
    Thanks for all the suggestions.
I found a place in the USA that has the parts, $29.30 for a spool and gear(now aluminium, so no more breakies). That is delivered to me.
The palce is www.reeldr.com and they are very helpful. They even emailled back to let me know the material the gear was now made from.
Funniest thing about all this is that Quantum said there was no more stock, and that's where they are getting the parts from??
I'll keep you all informed as the bits arrive.
