This was at Logan River Marine I think? I suppose if I drive down there, they will have just ran out.

Pardon my ignorance - what's the benefit of 2-speed?

If a reel has the gear ratio to get line back on the reel quickly, as well as (comparitively) slowly, why would you bring ever want to bring it on slowly? Is it to help "skull-drag" a fish away from the reef over the first few metres or something?

That's pretty much it , especially fishing deep water.
You don't want to wind for ages to get a small fish (or worse still no fish) up from 80 or 90 metres.
If you do latch on to a big one you have the power you need and you don't really care how long it takes to sort them out, plus you can always go to the higher ratio when they run out of petrol.
