    Sandhills - Thursday

As appears to always be the case when there is time to fish the weather decides that it is not going to play the game.

Anyway with the christmas festivities over and the weather reports suggesting only sloppy conditions Paul and I decided to do a trip to the sandhills to see if there were any mackeral around. We were both surprised about the lack of boats around for this time of year but didn't complain.

There was only 1 other boat at any one time over there drifting the same area we did. Unfortunately no mackeral although we did manage to large a small school or whaler shark. The amount of meat you get off these things is unbelievable and I have always thought that the small ones with some garlic, salt, pepper, basil and thymme taste great.

Also managed to get a few legal whiting as well. As with most trips to the sandhills there were grinners in plague proportions.

On the way home stopped in at green as we had heard of a few legal sweetlip being caught there - it was about midday by this stage though and only managed a couple of undersized ones. So the search continues for the elusive legal sweetlip.

Nice to out on the water and get a feed. Hopefully find the macks next time.

Good luck to all those getting out on the water.

Who knows what is happening around the traps this year, things are just not normal. 16 degree min overnight temps and very dry conditions must have an impact with the fish. To get a feed is a bonus, well done on getting something. The Sweetlip should arrive soon we hope, and probably in the next heat wave.

    Happy new Year!
