Looking at a 89 rangie and it has a viscous coupled B/W transfer case and does not seem to detent into low range and jumps out, the gear box has no bad noise at all and it was suggested that it is a sticky shift linkage, has any one any ideas

Sticky shift linkage sounds like a good SALES PITCH to me Blaze.
The toyota boxes can get radial movement of the bearings on the shaft and wear the shaft causing loss of preload. Causing gears to jump out.
You should be the man to fix it but I think it will still cost some cabbage.
    Cheers Kev.
