    Reef authority defends zoning review

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority says its zoning review will safeguard, not jeopardise, the future of coastal communities.

The group Recreational Enthusiasts Against Closures Totally says the plan will cut tourism dollars and increase fishing pressure on other parts of the reef.

However, the authority's director of communication and education, Bruce Kingston, says the bodies responsible for promoting regional centres can see the long-term benefits.

"People like Townsville Enterprise, Gladstone Area Development, Bundaberg region, Mackay Development Bureau, they're people that are concerned about the future of regional communities and have some good understanding of it," he said.

"So I'm fairly certain they've thought through this quite carefully and they understand that representative areas in the long-term will be good for their communities."
