Easter operation targets illegal fishing on Darling River

Illegal fishing on the Darling River will be targeted in a joint compliance operation between NSW Fisheries and NSW Police over the Easter long weekend.

The Director-General of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said large numbers of Easter fishers are expected with recent rain improving angling opportunities on the river.

“Easter is traditionally one of the most popular times for inland angling, and our officers will be working closely with police to ensure the laws are being followed,” he said.

“The operation will run on all four days of the Easter long weekend on the Darling River between Tilpa and Pooncarie.

“It will also be an opportunity for our officers to discuss fishing issues with anglers and advise them on aspects of the rules.

“Anglers should ensure they have a valid NSW recreational fishing licence and are familiar with fishing rules.

“The operation will also target the illegal use of traps and nets on the river.

“Earlier this week a 51-year-old man was caught with illegal fishing nets and traps on the river near Pomona. He has had his boat seized and will be summonsed to appear in court on illegal fishing charges.”
