Burdekin Falls Dam - The Sleeping Giant Awakes

Burdekin Fish Restocking Assoc have released 794,000 barra fingerlings into the huge Lake Dalrymple, 3 hours SW of Townsville. Unfortunately we would need to release over 1million each year to cover the whole lake as it is 55,000 acres. Not too many exciting catches have been reported until now.

Just before xmas 2003 a young local (Shane Malaponte) was having a picnic up at the dam wife his wife and before heading home around 2.30pm, he thought he may as well through a few lures around the shallows near the wall itself. To his surprise he almost immediately had the 'hit' of his life. A barra close to 25 pound took the lure, never surfaced and just took off like a freight train.

In 20 minutes Shane caught and released 3 barra all over 20 pound all in the one spot.

This lake is truly remarkable. It has a catchment of well over 100,000km2 and every always fills to over flow. Of course some big barra go over the wall and it is yet to be scientifically proven whether they survive, but biologists believe they are.

So it looks like our "Sleeping Giant" has finally awoken and large barra are prowling the inshore bays looking for tucker. Our group are very keen to start publicising this wonderful fishing and camping location and we need stories of fishing captures, like Shane's. Great stuff Scott. Yet another barra spot openning up. Our sweetwater lake fishing is only getting better & better.
