S.O.S. beacon tracked to garage
August 8, 2004

A DISTRESS beacon coming from a fisherman's garage in Sydney's south sent rescue services on a wild goose chase today.

Commercial aircraft approaching Sydney Airport first picked up a faint distress signal shortly after mid-day.

Australian Search and Rescue (AusSAR) called the NRMA CareFlight helicopter to use special tracking radio equipment to locate the beacon.

Air traffic controllers switched take-off and landing flight paths to allow CareFlight to search the shoreline under the normal Botany Bay approach flight path to the airport.

The signal was tracked to Kurnell, where the rescue helicopter landed on a football field.

Specialists believed it was coming from a boat in a garage after having trouble indicating the exact location of the signal, a CareFlight spokesman said.

The pilot and air crewman searched house-to-house for the distress beacon and tracked the signal to houses near the intersection of Torres and Dampier Streets.

However, the search was delayed after the crew were called away to treat a critically ill man in Sydney's south-west.

The spokesman said the beacon signal was then turned off after a local fishing club heard media reports about the signal.

"Kurnell residents told (the crew) a fishing contest had been held on Botany Bay earlier, and after organisers contacted members living in the area the signal was quickly turned off by an embarrassed but unidentified fisherman," he said.
