After talking to quite a few 4x4 experts - it seems to be common knowledge that ABS has a problem on sand and gravel.
Apparently there is a modification - installing a switch that disables ABS - mentioned on some of the 4x4 chatboards.
In fact the Mercedes Benz G Class 4x4 had the switch installed as standard but becasue of changes to laws the switch has been removed.

The guy that hit me swears he was standing on the brakes but the Landcruiser (600klm on the clock) just didn't pull up.
Something to be aware of - it might even be worth doing a few tests next time you're on sand just so you know what the vehicle will do if you're put in that situation.
According to many 4x4 chat boards, the simple solution is remove the ABS fuse.
