Hi Peter,
The barracuda/alligator gar creature, doesn't look like anything that swims in Australian waters. Although I may be wrong here, do you have more information? Just curious.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too Hoges. I don't blame your friend if he does get back to warmer weather; it's currently 18 degF or -8 degC outside. Not so much fun to be out in and almost impossible to cast a lure in. Not to mention there is about six inches of ice on all of the lakes.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr. C-c-c-cold!

Not so sure about the 1st pic being doctored. I saw a series of pics about these dirty big catties that the "good ol' boys" get in the states. Looked real to me. Perhaps one of our cousins from the US could set the record straight.
1st pic the catfish is a Mekong River Catfish from Aisa Near Laos.
Never noticed the top fin being so high in the other Oarfish pics i have seen, very pretty though Nice Pics!
Cheers
Brandon...
I reckon the catfish is definitely European or American; the giant mekong catfish is a very different looking fish.
The cattie pic is real, they catch them in texas by hand. They stick their fingers down a hole and wait for a big cattie to clamp down on them and then its a wresling match between cattie and "fisho" No b#llsh#t I have seen some awesome articles of guys doing this. They get big catties like that all over Europe as well its regarded as a top fish to chase.
The oar fish has also washed up on Australian shores over the past few years
Those cuttlefish would stink after a few days.
I always think of those poor people in their million dollar beach front homes
