A silver pearch will chase all other fish in the same tank untill they die. They will not stop. I speak from experience.

    Re: natives 4 tank

I had a school of 5 or so and found they would only fight eachother, usually they would just pick on the smallest one, they were pigs though, they left my cod and barra alone until I had to get rid of them before they became lunch

Grunter species like sooties and silver perch whill harras any other fish in your tank and are definetly a non-compatible species. Mangrove jack and murry cod are also higly fixed on teritory and will harras other fish. i should know ive tried all of the above.
my tank now consists of 5 sleepycod, 2 eeltail catties and 1 bass. i did have a barra but it died due to temperature stress my tank just got to cold (get a good heater for tropical climate fish).
so i think i might try to source a yella instead.
as far as bream are concerned you'll need to find 1 that has adjusted to freshwater or create a brackish water tank or go full marine but with the later ruling out all your freshwater species.

Id love to get a small toga but they do grow kinda fast and are known to jump out of tanks so keeping the water level down and a good lid is advisable.

    Re: natives 4 tank

I have a 30cm leichardt strain Toga and I kept it with some large Rainbow fish for 12 months. The Rainbows seemed smarter and more saavy than the toga so it could never catch them and eventually it got so frustrated chasing them around (territorial behaviour) that it 'was biting it's own tail so I had to remove the Rainbows. I also have had Jacks which are best kept alone. I had four until they ganged up on the weakest biting it's fins until it got so stressed it died. This happened repeatedly until only one was left. They are fairly boring in a tank compared to Toga and Barra which will feed out of your hand and provide entertainment for visitors. Hope this helps,
    Ray

i have had silver perch for a long time! and they didnt seem to harass any other native fish, i think they r generally peaceful fish in aquariums, the only problem i had, was with my sleepy cod eating my siver perch

    Re: natives 4 tank

I've seen four setups that were interesting but seemed to work.

1st was at nerang where a big toga, a big jack, some peacock bass and other natives were together. The jack and toga were ok but had 1 fight where the jack almost ripped the togas lip off.

2nd was at GC fishing tackle where a big jack and sooty seem to live in harmony.

3rd was at Q super center where a big toga killed a big jack and now there is another big jack in there which is fresh from the wild so may be a little tougher.

4th was at underwater world in the upper billabong where heaps of 1m+ barra live with a massive jack (estimated 90cm+), some big old sotties, a freshwater saw fish and some huge eels & catties.

had 2 sleepy cod with my barra of which they were all about 12 cm long, well the barra ate both sleepy cod in 2 days and had plenty of hidy hole the barra is really aggresive and is nothing for it 2 eat 6 feeder fish in seconds. looks like a tank upgrade is due. cheers bdowdy

    Re: natives 4 tank

There are two different species of Arowana in Aus.

    S. Jardinii biggest recorded at 17.2kg.

Other is S. Leichardti grows to 4kg.

The strange thing is that a 90cm jardinii is over 15kg but a 90cm leichardti is only 4kg.

    Hi Matthias
the set up your talking with the Jack, Toga and Peackcock Bass Thats mine lol
They werent fighting when the Toga got bitten
I was feeding them and they both went for the same piece of prawn
With these fish going together alot depends on tank size
Mine are together in a 10ft tank and are kept pretty well fed

lol. Yeah mate very impressive setup. I would love one of those peackcock bass, they were unreal. My jack (wild caught) is going ok but is still very shy and goes crazy when people move too fast near the tank. The other day he jumped out of the tank (knocked the lid off) and landed in a bucket. Luckily I was home and popped him back in.

Yeah I found my jack was skittish at the start but he is fine these days
I would invest in heavy lids if I was you mate lol

    Re: natives 4 tank

Just be aware they grow dam quick. I have a pet jack in a 6ft tank and 2 years on it's getting a bit tight in there. Would be about the 35-40cm mark. I also had a couple of other fish but the jack is very territorial (they didn't last) even whacks the glass when it gets agro. Great fish but make sure you've got a big tank if you want to get one. I got mine at a place called Mappins in Brisbane. It specialises in native australian fish. If that's what you're into you should check them out.
