New Record Set at BP Dam Golden Lure - 2,160!

    New Record Set

The Kingaroy Sportfishing Club’s Golden Lure, held on the weekend of the 5-6 November 2005, has confirmed its place among Australia’s top catch and release tournaments with a record 2,160 fish caught.

A field of 123 anglers, in 59 teams, from as far a field as Victoria, caught and released an average of more than 17 fish each for the weekend.

It was once again the Cyclone Spinnerbaits pairing of Goombungee’s Bob Town and Samford’s Cameron Bettany who stole the show.

The 2004 champions bettered the record 38.67m of fish they set last year with an astonishing total of 43.55m to win the North Coast Boating Centre Champion Team Trophy - about 13m clear of their nearest rivals, 2004 bridesmaids, team Evakool’s Matthew and Monique Mott of Murgon, on 30.57m who took out their own award, the Yallakool Café and Tackle Runner Up Team Trophy. #The Cyclone Spinnerbaits team now get their names on the perpetual shield also taking home custom Evakool Ice Boxes. #The second and third placed teams received rod and reel combos kindly sponsored by Daiwa.

The winning pair caught and released 110 fish in the allowed 16 hours of the
competition, at a rate of more than a fish every 10 minutes with an average size of close to 40cm per fish.

Town and Bettany also fought it out for individual honours, with Town winning the Yallakool Tourist Park Champion Angler Trophy compiling an impressive 22.04m of fish to edge out his younger team-mate Bettany by just 53cm. #Town will have the distinction of getting his name on the perpetual shield whilst Bettany got to take home a trophy sponsored by Baileys Mechanical of Nanango.

Kingaroy’s Thomas Herbohn and Wooroolin’s Brett Turner of team
Didyabringabeeralong helped fly the flag for the local brigade with 30.05m of fish to finish in third place. Herbohn secured 18.45m of fish for the weekend but was edged out of third place in the individual standings by Toowoomba¹s Trevor Stead on 18.61m.

Matthew Mott finished fifth in the individual standings with 16.72m of fish, followed by Wayne Hoppe with 15.95m, Linda Blake with 15.35m, Kevin Jones on 15.06m, Mick Turner on 14.44m and Ken Radunz on 14.06m.

Team Bass to the Bone’s Kevin Jones and Dane Scott, both from the Sunshine Coast, finished fourth with 28.19m of fish, edging out the local pairing of Ken and Glen Radunz on 27.07m.

Next best of the South Burnett anglers was Team Bass to Barra Marine’s John Davies and John Davies Jnr from Kingaroy and Lucas Kerkow from Wondai who finished ninth with 24.11m of fish. Kingaroy competitors Lee Black and Peter Keys in Team CMoo bolted from relative obscurity after Saturday’s fishing to sneak into the top 10 teams with 22.52m of fish.

Burpengary’s Zack McKay was king of the kids, landing 14.38m of fish to win the Bass to Barra Marine sponsored individual junior division.

However, South Burnett anglers dominated the rest of the junior division claiming five of the next six placings.

Murgon’s Monique Mott finished second on 13.85m of fish to take home the Kingaroy Caravans Runner Up Trophy with Kingaroy’s John Davies Jnr third on #11.63m, Murgon’s Dylan Mott fifth on 6.23m, Mondure’s Hamish Stewart sixth on 6.02m and Kingaroy¹s Corey Cooper seventh on 5.64m.

Trolling was definitely the method of choice for the competition with even the most ardent exponents of cast and retrieve resorting to the more relaxing approach.

As tends to be the case in this day and age, Jackall lipless minnows were by far and away the most successful lures used, in both soft and hard variants. Good numbers of fish also fell to trolled spinnerbaits with SMAKs being the standout performers.

The Longest Golden Perch trophy which had naming rights given to the BP Dam Fish Management Committee was won by Junior Angler Mark Rampling, (Yappa) with a 53cm Golden Perch on Saturday morning. #Jaimen Tunstall with a 52cm Australian Bass also from Saturday morning won the BP Dam Fish Management Committee Longest Australian Bass trophy.
