On Lady Elliott Island, many years ago we used to go night diving. You'd find the Coral Trout asleep under a ledge. Hold the net in front of him, tap him on the tail to wake him up and bingo, dinner.

It paid not to shine the torch up though, used to show too many little reefies above you attracted by the vibration of the struggling fish.

Whole pilly on a 6/0-8/0 hook on the end of a 60-80lb hand line. Most people say use as little lead as possible, but I tend to want to get down a bit quicker and feel than a 7-8 bean sinker helps me keep the line a bit tighter and helps catch less coral.

70/80lb handline, three gang hook rig say 6/0 to 7/0 mustard ganged hooks with Pillie attatched, wee sinker ONLY IF NEED BE running right up to the hooks and hoik the Pillie well away fom the Boat..
Allow the line to very slowly run with the tide(Bait finds fish) and be alert for the smallest of a nibble to a snatch n run .Start reefin in your line, DO not , i repeat do not wait about for the fish ta snag you under a bommie which is what will likel;y happen if your napping on the job lol..
Wear finger stalls(Bike tube) around your fingers save getting fingers cut too..
Alway a chance of catching trout whilst fishing for most reef species but idf you specificvally want to target them with the best option , the above method has served me the best...
Best n quickest way to pick up your lipper in the process also..
This is assuming your at Anchor too ..
Everyone has there favourite method for particular species and this ones mine fer Trout..
As for most other reef species its Rod n reel....
    Cheers
