i've seen that from quite a bit , but not too much on deep water fish , My guess would be some kind of mite that is causing infections under the skin ...the swelling pushes the skin , and the scales lift
The other day 2 of the fish we caught in 2 different area's had lumps on them[ not snapper either]. The first was a Footballer cod had about 4-5 raised area's over its body that all the scales were facing staight up instaed of flat. The other a Moari cod which had 2 on it. The raised area's are about the size of a 10 cent round by a 5 cent on its edge. We tossed them back in and went on fishing. Dose anyone know what these were? Didn't think to take a picture.... I have never caught any like this before

I have seen parrasite/worm infections on fish before so maybe your right. I just wasn't taking the chance
