I'm using backing on my TICA sculptor - two passes of a heavy 1.5mm thread. The manufacture of the thread though is not a tight spun thread.

Scott, i use backing under my braid. I have 12lb backing and 10lb braid for trolling for flatties. I filled the spool about half with mono, half with braid.
    Good luck

Yeah, I always used backing as well because otherwise it would cost you too much in braid. I just use some good quality mono similar to the breaking strain of the braid (usually ends up a bit lighter though).

I join the two with a double uni knot which doesn't seem to have let me down so far.
