    Mud Island Fishing

    Hello everyone,

Am thinking about heading out to Mud Island for the first time this Sunday morning, weather permitting.

Could anyone give me some tips about the place, I have read a little bit about it in Bush and Beach.

Things I would like to know are:

Which is the best side of the island to fish, best structure and so forth.

    Best tide to fish it.

And what species other than squire/snapper can you catch out there.

Also is there any chance on getting any live bait out there, or better to try and get some before I head out?

Also what is a good dead bait to use out there.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Just hope the winds don't decide to blow too strong this weekend.

    Re: Mud Island Fishing

only advice i can give is.....

get out to mud early...(just before sunrise),use berley (fish scraps mashed up in berley bucket) or throw over a few bits of cut up pilchard every 15/20 mins

im unsure on the best dead bait....peter (rainbowrunner) on this forum swears by fresh hardi-heads around mud island, but i guess pilchards and small squid would probably work a treat aswell,i would also try some soft plastics....go for 3" and 4" berkley gulps and realistix, pumkinseed colour is a personal favourite.

i probably havent helped you much

    Thanks very much Tim,

What weight should we be using out there. Whats the most popular targeted species, and do they catch many pelargics in the area?

Theres a lot of areas to seacrh around this island, pick the right tide and time of day and you should have success, you wont fill the esky but a feed is out there.
Fish a light as the area and tide will allow.
Ifyour into plastics they'll work or bait will work just as well.
Weather plays a big part as to where and when you can fish, and seas can get quite lumpy.
If your night fishing dont forget the rid, or the mossies will cart you and your boat away
Fish too heavy and you'll catch all the vermin you want.
There's bait around different sections of the island on the right tide.
Other species available trevally, jew, cod, sandies, whiting and a few mowong.
    That should get you started.
    regards
