Re: 52 kg jew
Hi All
I come from Durban further North Than J bay
These are common catches from the beaches 30kg plus on live Tailor (shad) in the gutters.
They are the same fish and are called Daga Salmon over there and may have a slightly different name further south..
The name BAI is Afrikaans for BAY and either name can be used depending on the persuasion of the shop owner.
A few more interesting facts
We have exactly the same Tailor run here in Australia at the same time of the year in Durban "only the bag limit is 4 there".
The spanish and spotties show up over christmas and run untill Late March, Then they head south to pick up the sardine run and finally follow the sardines north and are gone by Late june/July
The only fish they do not catch there is Whiting
Otherwise the fishing seasons probably coincide with the Gold coast.
One unusual thing
Jew fish in South Africa Like no Moon and here they like full moon
probably something to do with being on the opposite side of the world??
Full moon above in Brissy falls at 10pm approx with a high tide, the opposite is observed for Durban??
Is that a correct assumption.. go Figure
Cheers Mark.
