    Question Importing tackle in 2022

    Hey all

It's been a while since I've looked on any overseas web sites to look at reels & rods ...... A decade ago I reckon 50% of my gear was coming from overseas & I was saving considerable coin .

Mr Gerry Harvey put an end to that ..... canvassing the LNP government to ensure that GST was paid on all imports

Anyhoos - I just looked at Tackle warehouse US

If I bought a Daiwa Exist 5000 - It would cost around A$1325 (A$1460 with GST) & then freight ($?????)

That is going to be the best part of A$400 higher than the local price

Is it just me & this one example ...... or is this everywhere (US & Japan) ???

I'm curious to see what others have found

What was the AUD doing vs USD when you were making big savings?

On a related note - I buy my wife’s sleep apnea cushions from the US. They are $75 each here. Over there they were $18 US. Postage was about $40 so if I bought a bunch of them it was a significant saving. Went to buy some this week and one place wanted $145 for cheapest postage.

Never imported from the us unless I wanted specialist bass stuff

    always Japan

but then if you buy enough it was cheaper to fly there with why’s at then pay freight

I flew over one weekend on a $500 return flight special with Jetstar

stocked up and Brough some home in the suitcase and posted some other stuff back to me

the benefit of going ti the shops is not everything is on their websites and you find some cool stuff in the shops

    Thanks Billy

    About $985 with GST for the 5000 ...... So around a $140 saving .

That's a good price for a new release reel .

Matt - I cant remember but I certainly took advantage when the AUD was getting up near US$1.10

It was common to save 25-50% on the local price .

Mate for that price I’d sooner buy local. Support my local store and get the 5 year local warranty. I’d hate to see the day when the local stores are gone

yeah 10-12 years back the aussie dollar was about 1 to 1 with the US..

From the states I imported fishing reels, tackle, sonar and GPS...savings were around 40-50% even after paying delivery and USPS was so quick and I avoided paying GST back then as well..

These days the savings are limited so you may as well give your business to your local stores..

Which is exactly what I've done .

It's probably been 8 years or so since I've actually imported any fishing tackle ..... I think I was still living in Brisbane .

Though I did buy a Minn Kota & down rigger a few years back & saved a motser

But anyhow , this is more a curiosity .

Last night - I looked at Japan tackle's website ........ the reel was more expensive even without GST & freight added .

I brought in a hell of a lot of gear during the 2000s & regardless of the exchange rate there always was some kind of advantage ...... today with the cost of freight & the application of GST - the saving just doesn't seem to be there ..... but infact cheaper to buy local anyway.

Jap auction houses are still ok pricing if you know the rates and keep your eyes open.....blink and you will incur a hefty bill though.

I hadn't looked at the exchange rates (Yen) but it's much more favorable than it has been in the last 5 or 6 years

Its becoming normal now you no longer save on importing from the US, The cost of items in the US is now being priced the same as AUD so there are no savings the only savings u can get from the USA are when the product is on a special sale or new old stock or possibly discontinued products

have never paid gst on imports but then have never bought a reel in worth more then 1k aud

The other thing to consider is the Aussie importers don’t bring in every model of reel or range of rod line lures or anything else you want to think about
the jackal wall at sansui tackle shop is amazing in the range we don’t get here
sometimes you have to import when you can’t buy it here

still savings depending on the item in Asian stores

also daiwai doesn’t bring in their one offs like slp models
