Thread: Marine Batteries

    Re: Marine Batteries

I have the marine pro 780 x 2. I find that these marine pro discharge quite easily. They don't seem to last over 2 Years for me.

I am thinking of buying the Optima D34M batteries. Anyone used them before? Heard AGM are meant to be better.

Sent from my SM-G900I using Ausfish mobile app

AGM are definitely better last longer and more power per weight. The shop I worked at years ago had heaps of issues with the optima things may have changed though. I highly recommend the exide orbital AGM the output is much more compared to others with same rating and only 18.5kg

My optima blue top lasted 5 years in the Allison running a 150 hp yammy, once its capacity dropped to about 90% I put it into the tinnie running a 30hp merc and still going strong 2 years later. AGMs definitely better. Also those no maintenace lead acid type really aren't the go. I got the tops off one a couple of years old and found fluid levels had dropped, added distilled water gave it a solid charge and it bounced back well.

The optima D34M is a dual purpose battery - Cranking with deep cycling capacity. Personally I think these are probably the best marine battery on the market - spiral wound makes them very robust . I've owned 3 ( fried one when my Ctek charger had a spaz attack) . My last one was still going strong at over 6 years . I know when it comes to replacing my batteries in my Barcrusher - I'll go Optima again. .

The Optima is an AGM battery & reasonably unique as most AGM batteries on the market are deep cycle batteries (not dual purpose batteries) .... Lifeline do an AGM dual purpose ( double the price of a Optima) , Odyssey are AGM starting batteries.

Anyhow - yeh go the Optima

I recon allot of it comes down to how boats circuitry is set up. I've always set my rigs up with the typical separate house and ignition circuit. Good in the sense you can put the best fit for purpose battery on each side. I use AGM for house and lead acid for crank (but going to an optima for crank as well). If i only had one combined circuit for ignition and house i recon its hard to go past one of the "dual purpose" AGM style batteries, like optima's etc, seems like theres a few good options out there these days in AGM's that deliver solid crank performance.

Nagg, in case you didn't see them you can get those D34 blue top optima in a specialist start version (darker case) if thats what your after. Rated at 50 more crank amps i think. Not sure how different they really are to the dual purpose.

    Hi Scott

    No , I didn't notice that there was an extra 50cca ……

If space wasn't an issue for me - I'd be looking at 2 x D31M 900cca & 75amp deep cycling …… that's some serious battery capacity right there.
