it depends on the type of marlin ….

For a black it's somewhere around 2.25m body length - jaw to tail fork .

we used to have a laminated chart that gave the weight to length of marlin & sharks ……. very useful

Pretty normal for Marlin down here, I did hear of a small one being caught, around 50KG, but that's very rare, and I only heard about it, nothing confirmed, so who knows if it's true, the ones caught today were 2 Striped and a Black.

I really had hopes of getting a marlin mouth to tail around 1.2-1.3, 2m overall

I would love to get the little boat out there i think it would be boarder lining ok 16kms out in a 4.5m boat is quiet a distance if weather turns bad

Just cant afford a epirb and radio at the moment plus trying to sell smaller boat to repay the other projects gets in the way of things

Hopefully i can nail out the big boat before the end of next year november/december'ish to get out there for the marlin in january

Big boat still needs a bit of work, i know i would rather the security of the 5.7m boat over 4.5m boat especially if there are 3 of us onboard

Would need some good tackle i have not looked into yet hooks, lines, traces, need a bait tank both boats dont have one

A lot more research to be done too i think on the hot and cold currents

Gazza, in my humble opinion, a 4.5 or 5.7 boat will still put you on the same fish your chasing.
Preparation and understanding weather/ water temps will put you on the same catch you are seeking. 5 k’s or 16’s out your not making it back to the beach swimming unless tides and currents are favourable.
I’ve always wondered why people think it’s safer at sea closer to land than in deeper water when most shit happens on a bar crossing than offshore.
