    Re: Little black marlin (Sydney)

Im pretty strung out for cash as i just loaded up on some supplies for the boat and with christmas coming in 2 weeks...

The tld15 is cheap $60 and is spooled with 15kg braid

Is there much difference from the tld15 to tld25-30's?Attachment 120504

Quite a bit. The 20 and 30 have bigger drags/ spool diameter, as well as obviously bigger line capacity. The 20 is a narrower version of the 30.

I bought the reel so far looks good came with the warranty card, it was purchased 1 year ago and used once i was told

I noticed when i was inspecting it as i rotated the handle it had a notchy spot in the same location each turn is this a problem?

I looked up the drag specs the TLD 15,20,25 all have 10kg of drag

Seller said it had 15kg line on it but looks more like 15lb

    I bought it for $60

The first thing I'd look at would be the brass spacer that sits under the silver cap that has the handle fixed on it,you'd be surprised how many of these find them selves between the main gear and the bushing from people that open them up to have a look.Next would be the main bearing that is housed in the handle side plate, they are assembled virtually dry ex factory and if they are left in a side rod holder and driven through the ocean they seize in no time.....especially if used once and packed away, this bearing should be greased with a light lube right from new.I know Shimano claim big drag numbers for these reels but fact is this reel will be happy with 8 to 10 kg line on it running 3 to 4 kg of drag. There should be no feed back/resistance through the handle at full drag.

Got it pulled apart and reassembled only thing i done was reversed the white thrust washer, the bearing pictured has plenty of grease but the one inside of the spool was dry

The reel now rotates perfectAttachment 120508Attachment 120509

    Hey Gazza

Mate think long and hard about this marlin caper ….. Marlin need a specialised approach & experience counts for everything . The setup of the boat , correct tackle etc because down our way you just cant count an a " little black" like you get on the flats around Fraser Island & it's more likely that you will encounter 80-150kg fish. These are dangerous fish boatside & it is imperative that you & your deckie know what to expect . Knowing how to handle / trace a fish is important …. very important. trust me on this.
I did a few years of small boat fishing for marlin & I'm glad I fished with experienced game fishoes first .....

I would spend some time with someone who fishes for them ….. join a club & hook up with someone for a few trips.
This will give you the opportunity to see what gear is used & required …… Because these fish run fast & long - cheaper gear can be destroyed pretty quickly ….. Ive certainly seen several budget outfits literally melt & explode under the pressure of a modest sized marlin.

Learn the ropes first is my suggestion.

    Chris
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

They are easily caught from trailer boats but everything has go to be going your way and experience accounts for most right down to lure selection and trolling speed ,it’s not like catching flathead or snapper but can be easily done with the right gear and technique.
This is one of the smaller ones we got from my tinnie ,we got 3 that day but out of 10 boats trolling the same area only 2 boats landed fish
A bad days fishing has got to be better than any day at work......

The fun is in the journey Gazza, we started Marlin & YFT fishing with Alvey deep sea snapper reels on solid fibreglass rods (broomsticks).

Yeah i understand the risks and potentioally a marlin still being green coming at the boat or beside it we would be a fair way out if something was to go wrong i have seen the videos of some of those hair raising near misses

I really want the challenge, we live life once and im almost 40..

I wont mind trolling for hours as long as there will be bi catch, drifting as Noel mentioned will be better

Absolutely and you only get one go at life and it wizzes past so quickly , all the info you need is here and on you tube . Sometimes fishing isn’t about the fish but the route you take to get the runs on the board, hopefully you get out and get a few after all this . Good luck

I bought my first Everol (4/0) before you were born Gazza, never had the need to replace it so although it was expensive at the time it has turned out to be quite cheap in the long run.

The minute your drag is not perfect you need to soak the white fella in shellite for ten to twenty minutes, maybe even scrub it gently with a toothbrush, let it dry right out and it will be good to go.The mirror finished plate also needs to be perfectly clean and dry (no smudges) never over lube the spool bearing and the drag plate bearing with the spring between them as oil on this washer is a drag killer.

    Re: Little black marlin (Sydney)

Last night i had a good feel for the reel it was notchy at 3,6,9,12 o'clock i think thats why old mate sold it for $60

It was cheap it fit my budget i found a couple 20-25's but they looked well and truly shagged

I overly under estimated this reel i thought it was going to be a lot bigger than it was, i have little knowledge on overheads besides the penn level wind i have only used a mates bloody huge over head and i was the only lucky one to hook a bronze whaler about 1.2m only a baby but trying to reel the shark in on that huge reel it kept flopping to the sides as i reeled

I wanted to avoid that experience and not go so big, the TLD15 is the same size as the Penn level wind which is great its small and light holds plenty of line
