Thread: Open boats offshore

    Open boats offshore

Hi anyone recommend big open boats for offshore here in Australia like in Queensland and NSW chasing game fish.
The yanks luv them but I'm not sure they have the same conditions as we do and not sure how fun it would be coming home from out wide vs coming home in a solid cuddy HT in big swell and rough condition.

Have only fished offshore with open boat, by that I mean centre console. Yes you get wet and in winter that's a bit of a bugger but it's great fun coming back home into a rain squall. You remember you're alive...
and so much better for fish access all around the boat.

What size centre console and what part of the country you fished it in?

Ive fished from two centre consoles from Lucinda. One 4.7metre and one 5.5 metre. I got a little bit wet in the larger one but conditions weren't great. All considering, it wasn't too bad and nothing a spray jacket wouldn't help with.

Here are a couple I think would suit:

I've fished out from Sunny coast and Fraser in anything from 4.8 side console to 5.5 CC, also off gladstone area in 5.5 cc.

I'm on my second centre console - first was a Quintrex 535 Reef Raider & now a Baracrusher 615 WR .

I've had both boats up un North Qld - Whitsundays & have had to deal with some horible conditions . Living in Sydney both boats were / are used for offshore fishing - chasing everything from snapper , jew , tuna & even marlin …… yes you can & do get wet in them - but you can add clears with side pieces (wings) that eliminate that spray you cop from the windward side.
for all round fishability - the CC wins imo .
I've certainly fished from a lot of boats & configurations but I just love the CC with my ideal trailer boat probably being a 7m centre cab .
A CC isn't exactly family friendly …. but that's where a centre cab can slot in

    Chris
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

Yep, as Nagg said, my Tournament Bluewater 1900cc does the same.

Fished Offshore from Hathead NSW up to the Whitsundays. Regularly fish the bunker group off 1770 80+ k’s offshore always felt safe but yes spray does happen when she blows which is the compromise.
I love the 360 degree fish ability.
It’s my second centre console having had a Haines Hunter 520 Prowler which was an incredible 17ft CC in regards to ride just that tad small in regards to deck space.

When the kids were home/little I had cabin boats mostly for comfort for the wife and somewhere for them to shelter if it did blow but now it’s “ME” time where I can be selfish as I mainly fish solo.

Personally, if I lived south of Sydney I wouldn’t go the centre console purely because of the winter cold. Probably getting soft as I age!😂

Drove this in Florida for a few weeks recently. Brilliant machine, but the price of fuel here would make it very expensive to run.Attachment 120455

5.8m Noble super vee C/C, got wet in the rough stuff at times but it got tested in some very very ordinary conditions and not once felt unsafe..

Fishing comps when you really shouldn't be out kind of weather...

Surfing in a 5.8m boat kind of stuff!!!!
