    Garmin 7”

    Hi all.

About to replace the sounder in my tinnie.

Looking at a 7” Garmin, as I am family with the brand, and don’t like chance.

Looking at options, and note a big price difference between the Echomap plus 75sv and the striker plus 7sv.

Is is there an equal difference in performance?
    what are the differences?

this unit will be used primarily in the estuaries, with the occasional trip offshore.

Price is not my only consideration, will happily pay for for a better product, but also don’t want to pay extra if not needed.

    thanks
    Rob

I believe one of the biggest differences is that the Striker has no maps, just GPS so if you need contour details etc then the striker isn't any help.
Remember to always log on before heading offshore.

    two main differences.
Strikers do not have maps and they do not have SD slots to upload your waypoints or download from the machine. This must be done manually through the menu one by one.
Apart from that the Striker is a half decent side view fish finder.
Had mine running for about 5 years now without a drama.

I think the Echomap gets the quickdraw contours too. Not 'needed' in an estuary but very very handy. Also great for offshore work.

Saves having to buy more detailed maps, you just draw your own!

    Thanks alot men.
sounds like the extra dollars will be worth while for the Echomap.

The no map thing is the deal breaker for me.

    Thanks again

I found the contours good for the first run over an area, revisit it 6 hours later on a different tide height and it destroys the image.
So turn your contours on then turn it off before revisiting.

Sounds like they 1” contours are not standard for a reason...

You need to set the tide offset every hour to make accurate maps - there is a Utube vid on it.

    Maybe on an older model?

Out EchoMap 65cv installed earlier this year has no such drama and I haven't used the tide offset either.

Used mainly in river, but, couple of trips to offshore reefs have produced amazing detail with drifts and trolling speed movement across the same areas a few times.

How old is your unit? Have you update software, using latest software?
