    Re: Right of way

This guy is probably at home telling his family and friends, Can u believe it this ship would not alter course for us he was going to collide

its a bit like the small 10 14 foot skiffs in between the bridges at botany bay they come by your boat 2 meters off at 55kph just to try get u to move away from the area so they can sail, it must be something about sailing boats some are just absolute strokers

Noel there might be some information on the maritime map on the RMS web site u can download the appropriate for which ever part of the harbour u were in and they have warnings on it and pretty sure giveway information

had a quick look to much to read https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents...rt-jackson.pdf

Maybe he didn't see us, it's only 300m long, 88,000 tonnes capable of 25knots and 12 stories high!

Late last year I was sailing out of Sydney on Ovation of The Seas and as we were “backing out” of Circular Quay I could not believe the muppetry (I made that word up) of small craft operators even with 2 harbour escort boats. They were coming 20-30 metres behind it while it was in motion between it and the escort boats.I guess they would not feel all of her 168000 tonnes and 368 metres.Sorry Noel M not a p$$$$$g contest...

Yeah, been on Ovation too, it is amazing what goes on when you are a "boatie" and know how stupid some of these people are, I guess being Sydney Harbour there is a big number of more money than sense boat owners to contend with.

Was the skipper of the yaught wearing lycra?

    Re: Right of way

I can't say I really noticed what he was wearing, but, more than likely white shoes, long socks, lots of gold chains and a captains hat!

Keeping a proper lookout. Means more than just making sure you don't spill your chardonnay.

I windsurf, crew on keel boats 38-57ft, go powerboating in a tinnie and a 19 footer. Never ceases to amaze me some of the dumbass attitudes in each of these groups. Some of my windsurfing "mates" thinking it's OK to go blasting through powerboat traffic at 25kts+ "because I have right of way". Sheesh.

Nah if he was he'd have had 2 mates running abreast blocking traffic while they chatted.

    Re: Right of way

There are many reasons people do dumb things, especially on the water. Stupidity is near the top of the list with ignorance, inexperience and a lack of awareness of the consequences of said dumb thing. Those little skiffs on Sydney harbour were gathered out of the channel near the 'Sow and Pigs' as I came past one morning, I'm doing 7kn, they're stationary 80m off my stbd side, no problem. Then one skiff shot out of the group straight at my stbd bow, I near shook the gearbox out of a 120t boat in a crash stop trying to avoid making mince out of the 10 year old kid with eyes as big as dinner plates as he dissappeared under the bow. There was no collision thank dog but that kid is going to remember that day. As an instructor I once had said "you might be the stand on vessel but you're a long time dead"

And then stopped in at the Jetty Cafe and carried on like they just sailed in the America's Cup.
