Thread: Portable Fridge freezers

    Re: Portable Fridge freezers

" We intend on filleting fish and storing them for the 9 day trip to save space."

It's a good "reef fin fish" to be able to get a fillet that's 40cm.
Make sure you are aware of this.
Below is a link to the laws.

In relation to coral reef fin fish, a recreational fisher:

    • must not possess, on board a boat, a fish other than in any of the following forms - whole, gilled, gutted or filleted

Does this mean you can fillet your fish on board and freeze them down as long as the frame is kept (and can be matched to the number of fillets)?

These are the current QLD laws.

    Skin and fillet removal

In relation to coral reef fin fish, a recreational fisher:

    • must not possess, on board a boat, a fish other than in any of the following forms - whole, gilled, gutted or filleted
    • may possess, on board a boat, a fillet of a fish other than a blue spotted coral trout (Chinese footballer) as long as the length of the fillet is at least 40 cm, and the skin and scales of the fillet are attached to the fillet
    • must not return fish to a boat that have been taken ashore from a boat and filleted, unless the length of the fillet is at least 40 cm and skin and scales of the fillet is attached to the fillet

    or

    • must not possess a live coral reef fin fish unless the person or fisher intends to immediately return the fish to the sea or to display the fish in an aquarium.

In relation to fin fish (other than coral reef fin fish) a recreational fisher must not:

    • remove the skin from a fish on a boat until the fish is brought to shore
    • bring a fish ashore and remove its skin and return the fish to the boat
    • divide a fish into portions other than in a way that allows an inspector to easily count the number of fish possessed by the fisher

In relation to barred javelin (spotted grunter) taken in the Gulf of Carpentaria, in addition to the above, a recreational fisher must:

    • ensure that the whole fish is at least 40 cm in length
    • ensure that the fillet is at least 26 cm in length.

    Re: Portable Fridge freezers

Oh... thank you for the information above. I was not aware of these laws at all. Looks like we will have to get a larger freezer to keep the fish whole (gutted though) This makes it harder to store, but so grateful for the information now so we can decide properly what we need..and so we dont get into trouble!
We so far decided on a 200w solar mat and 2kva gen. We have until April so will just keep our eyes open for bargins.
EDIT... so... reading up on laws..it says you can not have more than 20 fish in your possession, freezer at home included. But is this 20 fish per person? Or is it 20 fish per family household? I cant find any clarification on this point...

    Re: Portable Fridge freezers

It is 20 fish per person bacuse it is an individual possession limit. “A rcereational fisher” = 1 person.

It is a interesting point though - once fish/fillets are in the family freezer, it is clearly an arguable, and IMO a very reasonable point that they are then in the possession of all of the house’s occupants.

    So 5 occupants = 5 x the individual 20 CRFF possession limit.

Same as in your boat - if there are 5 POB then each person has a 20 fish limit (assuming none in freezer at home) and it matters not who has caught them. Who keeps track anyway? LOL!

It would take a very bold fisheries inspector to try to issue an infringement notice to you and argue that the 5 x 20 number were not in possession of all people normally residing at the residence. I doubt if any of them would be silly enough to try that on unless they had other compelling evidence to back it up.

Equally, on the flip side of the coin, dont get caught driving the car down the road by yourself with 5 x the individual possession limit in the esky that is in the boot. And try to claim that the fish are not in your possession because they belong to you and 4 mates - that aint gunna wash. (Maybe if they are in the following car you MIGHT not get charged, but I wouldnt bank on it.
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

    Re: Portable Fridge freezers

Thank you for the clarity on this. We well have 4 ppl on board, and 4 in the car, not that we would be expecting to catch 80 fish lol! But over a 9 day span if we do catch over 20, at least we know we can bring them home without getting into trouble. As long as we successfully keep them cold, plus we will give some to friends who are looking after our home and pets while we are away.

I didn't know about this law - heck I often when on longer trips keep fish alive in a live well if it is going to be consumed that day ...... 1 fish for the table kind of thing & everything else is released .

    Chris
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!
