merc 90 2st oil res. leaking

Before I buy a new tank, does anyone have a fix for the well documented oil reservoir leak? It leaks at the filler neck when the engine's tilted, leaving the transom covered in oil.

Tilt the motor and fill it up to just below the cap.
So its only about 2/3 - 3/4 full.
    Thats what i do.

assuming it has a cap that threads on to the tank, could you get away with using thread tape, the yellow one they use for gas is extra thick hence it might fill up the threads as the cap may have distorted.

i do this also, but occasionally i fill it too much, or tilt the motor up a bit too far, and it leaks everywhere!

its an unusual cap, which doesn't have a thread as such, it tightens on itself and expands a thick o-ring which presses against the filler neck. i believe the neck distorts over time, then leaks!

Hose clamp around filler neck helps.

i'm guessing where the o-ring sits, and do you undo it each time you refill?
