Thread: Cable clips adhesive

    Cable clips adhesive

Ok , i am preparing to install my Axiom9 on my 420 renegade. I have to drill 3 holes to mount the transducer, cant escape that. The cable can go straight up and over the open back transom so i dont need to drill any holes. The unit comes with a set of "P" clips which need screws. I would rather use those cable tidy clips with adhesive backing and cable tie over.
My question , is the adhesive on these strong enough to tolerate time around water or should i strip off the adhesive and put a dab of silastik?

For the transducer you could get a bracket welded so that the holes are in it and not the hull. I had to change transducers myself and of course the new holes didnt match up, so I used a piece of 10mm ally I had and screwed it to the hull using the existing holes with plenty of sika flex. The 10mm ally I drilled and tapped to take the new hole pattern.

I've used those tidy clips but have had trouble getting them to stick, maybe there is a Marinised version. I did have some HD double sided tape which seems to hold but first I had to clean the area with ally cleaner really well.

It comes with a bracket so that part is a no brainer.

If there is a marinised version, its a well kept secret, lol. I was more concerned about longevity. A good clean lets the adhesive set quite well. But if its only going to last a few weeks, i can use the silastik instead. I have a box of swab cleaners for the alloy.

No marinized version to my knowledge. If you must use them, pull the tape off and use some sika. Personally I use screws sealed up properly and these type mounts so if the transducer has to come off it's just a case of cutting the ties

They always eventually let go. You may be able to glue a strip of something to the transom to screw into as another option. There are specialist "Transom Saver" products available - I've never used them though. If a client has ever wanted something similar I have screwed a piece of Starboard or Seaboard with nicely routered edges to the transom using plenty of waterproofing and then screwed to that. Maybe a full height strip from the transducer to the capping?

    thats a good idea too.
I have decided to get the selfadhesive clips, rip off the adhesive and put a small blob of silastic. I will let it sit for a few days. Its not like the clips carry a heavy load. I only have 15-20" exposed so will probably go to bunnings and pay ripff $5 for 5 . you can get a whole box from electrical wholesalers for $10, but i only need 5, lol.

Generally transducers come with a bracket, are you replacing an existing one, if so I would go the ally or as Scott says, you can use Starboard or Seaboard. Not all brackets fit the same holes and a baseplate will stop you plugging and sealing holes.

I said silastik, but i meant sikaflex, marine grade polyurethane adhesive. Very different creatures.

Totally missed the Renegade 440 LOL. Other way to do it is with a bit of alloy flat bar bent as required at both ends to make it stand off the transom - secure it to the transducer bracket at the bottom (you are drilling here anyway) and then another hole into either the top of the transom or the back of the extrusion that forms the transom cap for the top . A couple of decent size pop rivets and some sika and you have a nice bar to attach with cable ties to with no penetrations that stand any chance of letting water in.

3M do a super strength outdoor adhesive tape.
You need to cut it off to separate the parts.
Comes in a 3m roll with red plastic between the layers.

I ordered some online a few years ago and I amazed it has not let go yet for the hammering it gets.
    Jack.

Talking to Aluminium cladding installer today at work and he recons the 3M stuff is very very good. He had what looked like a 20m roll with red separator. Apparently its guaranteed to 20 floors, lol. Yes alucabond cladding is held on with double sided tape !!!
