Thread: Noisy overhead reel

    Noisy overhead reel

For all the reel maintenance experts. What's going on here, the reel started getting noisy a few trips ago. So I pulled it totally apart, cleaned and re-greased (reel grease) everything and then reassembled it. No change it's still noisy and is definitely coming from the gears and drive. Its more noisy with the lever drag engaged to normal fishing conditions.
    What's needed....more grease....less grease....another type of grease.

Ive got a short video but cant seem to be able to upload it currently.

Noise like that isn't grease related - I don't think, I'm no expert in reels but I have industrial bearing experience.
To me it sounds like a roller bearing issue.
I'm guessing it has roller bearings ?
From the gearing and the sound/frequency my guess would be one of the spool bearings.
    Just my 2c.

Can't access your video, but I'm guessing bearing.Probably one that the pinion/drive is connected to?

    Re: Noisy overhead reel

Agree , have a few reels with the "Ten Bearings Plus " logo , and they do offcourse but those longish ones and after a wee while they all purr or burr noisewise but still run okay otherwise ..

Talica 16. I purchased the bearings locally and just need to service the reel and put them in.

Double check you have spacers in the correct location. It could be preload on bearings and gears from not being exactly aligned correctly.

    Re: Noisy overhead reel

Fitted the new bearings and gave it a good clean/grease. All good now quite as a mouse.

    Re: Noisy overhead reel

Mate sounds like a scratchy bearing. The bearing may feel ok after cleaning but will make that noise I suggest u change the bearing/s
