    I also have the GarminGMR18HD+ 4kW 36nm radome.
    Works good for me.

    this is a facinating thread guys. I knew nothing about boat radar before this. The main takes from this are quite obvious once you are told. Long range is impossible due to height above boat installation on anything less than 8m. I would think anything above 5km range would be more wishful than than usefull. 5km is way plenty time to get out of the way, lol. Any kind of swell/chop is going to make it hard to work as desired. Sure the limitations are pretty solid but its amazing how well the engineers have managed to design things that work. From an electronics point of view, i would have thought radar was easier to design (thus cheaper) than sonar. From an electronics point of view, not that much different. maybe the antenna array may be difficult but nothing new here. ( think mobile phones) .
    stay tuned to the convergence of technology. One unit does it all is on the horizon.
