Thread: Vintage Inboard Cruisers to Centre Console Conversion

Re: Vintage Inboard Cruisers to Centre Console Conversion

Jumped in the boat this afternoon and had a better eye ball at the tabbing on the inside of the transom and it looks fine very minor air pockets what i had seen was the gluing not air pockets

spent 30mins chopping up some coreflute to make a pod it was difficult to hold and tape in place than it kept falling down so looks like crap not properly centered or at the right height but its there just to give me a general feel for what it will look like

i will use the coreflue as a template still need to adjust my angles, once the transom is glassed i will work on the pod and decide if i should go a V bottom or flat bottom pod also i need to decide if i am going to glass the pod on or build a separate pod and bolt it on any advice before i fair the transom?

my roll of glass should be here today or tomorrow also these pictures o the template build wont be going into the build videos on youtube as they look like ****! but its only templates

i wouldnt pod, but if your going to, follow the contour of the hull. Anything else is in effect a stepped hull. Now thats something you wont cope with, lol.

Re: Vintage Inboard Cruisers to Centre Console Conversion

Andy i have no experience with pods but have read a little about them i was going to follow the hulls contour lines but i have no hope in hell sliding the hull back to make the shape i only have around 100mm before the last roller on the keel

I think im going to shorten the pod as in front to bak and side to side but i dont want to go to small and make it look odd i have decided to use glass over ply for the pod the bolt the pod to the transome with decent size bolts with plates on both sides

A pod design is still out there if i dont like how mine turns out when i shorten the templates i will start again

Been playing around with the templates just not and i got a nice looking pod that i am happy to build it still allows me to use a transom bung too which i like rather than single drain thru the hull than pod and out

i'm going to start building the pod soon anyone got a idea on what thickness plywood would be ok to use? going to hand a V4 possibly a V6 off it depending on what is available when i'm finished

i have 4 dogs and my 14 year old boarder collie always sits by my side his the foreman lol

i think your bang on with the first pod, allthough i agree with Noelm that its too long, i would aim for around 40 to 50cm max. i think you should encourage more width with the pod. i can tell you from owning a podded boat that mine was like a iceberg, 3/4 was under water and unless you got some great boyauncy or make it big enough, you are constantly worried about drowning the engine when you take off, slow down and bob around . i think those jack plates that are adjustable are a good idea too.

Yeah the first one looked ok i should have just shorten it from 80cm i was trying to eyeball it from a distance as i don't want it to big and i don't want it to small either i need to find that right size but the wider i go the smaller the sides become on the pod because o the V'ed hull, i am going with a extra long shaft to avoid the drowning of the outboard as the pod sits now that suits the extra long shaft outboard

I'm ok with the one i have now but open to any idea's or knowledge on pods before i start making it

the top front fo the pod i think i marked at 62.5cm which i think is 25"

Ordered my cloth over 1 week ago sadly its not Trojan Fibreglass fault they got my order out the next day but strangely the courier they decided to use for my order only delivers on Wednesday to my area, i live in Western Sydney what company operates like this in Sydney lol i think they may have misplaced my order

i asked about the air bubbles and was told something under the cloth is off gassing this maybe the case when i am laminating the plywood but once the first layer is down i can't see it being a problem on further layers once its cured so its a strange one

cloth should be here today so i will get cranking when i have the spare time

Got a bit of a strive to get more work under way on the boat the passing of my last grand parent my nan passed away 2 days ago its a wake up call not to take life for granted and anything can change at any moment, my pop who was in the navy use to work on the ships back in the 1990's he was well known around the Sydney Area, my nan will be kicking back with my pop saying what took ya so long lol

got my 10th layer of double bias on today i think 6.5mm of double bias would be stronger than 9mm of chopped strand mat

going to give it 2 days to cure than a massive sanding job than i will start to fair the surace

Re: Vintage Inboard Cruisers to Centre Console Conversion

She was looking a little hairy there like a 70's porn star but all trimmed now and i also sanded back the gel coat and fairing mix that was a demanding job I'm not fit but the holding up of the grinder to shoulder and above height was punishing maybe i need to do some more gym time ha

i wiped over the outer skin plus the top of the inner skin and along the top of the transom to wipe away any amine blush, i cranked up the air compressor and blew everything down next step is to round off the top of transom both inner and outer sides than glass and cap the top of the transom in 2 layers of 400g double bias, once this is cured i will be ready for fairing

had to pack up as a huge storm just hit Sydney

Re: Vintage Inboard Cruisers to Centre Console Conversion

Saw the storm building, it came kind of at us, then turned off and went NW, I guess over to your place, we got about 50 spots of rain, and gale force wind, but all good now, just windy.

Re: Vintage Inboard Cruisers to Centre Console Conversion

Yeah that was the one i think it just missed me, we got the dark clouds and a few sprinkles of rain that's when i packed up the wind was crazy my tarp over the boat was flapping i thought i was going to need a new replacement but it held up lucky

the past week in Sydney has had some crazy windy days maybe its due to the season changing i donno but i am thankful no dirt is being blown up on my wet layup however the tarp flapping is making a mess inside the boat dust and dirt and old bits of rotted timber going all over my tabbing i still need to finish, trying to leave as much let over timber in the boat to hopefully stop it from folding before i can glass in new stringers otherwise i would like a spotless hull

hope there is no more rain coming i rarely see the news and just wing my days i glass, yesterday i glassed early and it was hard by 5pm so happy about that the days are warming up slowly

Re: Vintage Inboard Cruisers to Centre Console Conversion

Anyone got advice on how to go about the fairing? i have the outside skin that is 10mm thick than where i have glassed it ended up being around 6.5-7mm thick so i have that 3mm space to fill should i fill the lot with fairing mixture or can i get away with just feathering the fairing around the inner outshirts sections?

i put the first layer of fairing on today to see how i go but i don't have a direction as of yet how i am going to do it
