    VSR on older outboard

Hi this has probably been asked before but can you run a voltage sensative relay to charge a house battery on an older outboard with a rectifier charging system. Will it damage the rectifier when it switches on and off.
    Cheers.

Yes you can as it has nothing to do with the outboard rectifier

The VSR will only charge the house battery after the first battery Has reached 13.8 V that maybe your biggest issue as old tech outboards use a coils system which have a lower output that a new tech alternator

Thanks for that I am aware that the older motors dont put out a lot of amps but not runni ng huge electronics on the house battery. Just didnt want to blow up the rectifier at 250 ish a pop.

They all use a rectifier, alternators, generators, charge coils or any other method of charging your battery, produces AC, it needs to be "rectified" to DC to charge the battery, more modern motors have much higher output than "olden days" outboards, some even have a secondary charge setup to charge a second battery.

Before you drop the money on the VSR, just make sure that it will actually be worth it by monitoring the voltage of your start battery when running - if it never gets high enough to actually switch in the VSR is pointless. They usually won't switch in until somewhere over 13.4 or so volts give or take depending on model.
