    Mercury 30hp Shift Shaft (Upper)

    Guys,

Prepare to giggle, I can take it (although I'm not really in the mood )

Whilst trying to replace an impeller in the outboard the shift shaft has separated on the upper end (a few washers and whats looks likes a severed pin with split pin dropped out when foot was removed).

From what I'm seeing online it looks like a total head removal is required to fix this (Is this correct?)

Any and all help / advice would be appreciated - I'm absolutely kicking myself at the moment.

    Thanks.

    Ern..

I'll take the heat off you.

The first water pump I ever did was a 65HP Mercury nearly 50 Years ago.
Being young & silly I didn't align the shift splines properly & used the gear case bolts to 'pull' the leg up.
Unbelievably the shift shaft shattered from compression.
Leg off, powerhead off & start again with my new found knowledge of what not to do.

Seriously, lifting the powerhead off is not a big deal, battery cables, fuel line, control cables and undo some bolts.

    Hi Garry,
Yes, I took it over to a boat place and that was their assessment also....

I'm not 100% on the year, it would be 20 odd years old though.
