Thread: White spot in the Logan.

Yes, they may have tested X amount of product NOW, but it's too late now, the disease is here, and no amount of sackings or fines is going to fix it, we need full Government support, and we need it right now, not much use setting up a dozen steering committees and working parties, another "department" or anything else, intense scientific involvement at almost any cost needs to be implemented to kill this shit thing, THEN, a strong stance to prevent this rubbish from ever coming here again, even if it means we have to eat our own wild caught products, rather than sending it offshore, the fisherman might get a bit less (maybe) but it will be a damn lot more than they are getting right now, you might think I have a rather black and white view of this imported shit, and I can tell you, I do!

We have enough wild prawns here not to import but when everyone complains about all the trawlers killing everything now we don't have enough trawlers to catch them now and now no prawn farms either in SEQ, i wonder how long it will take for the price of bait prawn to go up and to here about everyone complaining about it.

This will depend on whether any of the boats that target bait prawn leave that side of the industry to target food prawns. The two are vastly different targets - the greasy is the prawn typically targeted for bait but most green prawns that are sold are typically kings and tigers. If the market price for food goes up to such an extent that boats no longer target the greasies and thus create a shortage, like any supply and demand industry the price will rise. To date this hasn't happened. If whitespot gets into the bay or the Brisbane river it may be a different story though.

From what I can decipher the reports were about a Shipment in 2010? So that's just one we know about going back more than 6 years. How many have tested positive since then and been allowed through considering this shipment was considered extremely low risk? Obviously these numpties at biosecurity need to re-calibrate what their risk scales are because white spot got in and you can be 99% sure it came through imported prawns.

Completely agree with your stance on the action that is required from this point on though. I am more than happy with a full blanket ban on all Imports of crustaceans where white spot (or any other disease we don't have for that matter) is any risk at all. Imagine biosecurity taking the same risk management approach as this with tilapia or cane toads, or lantana or rabbits, or donkeys with what we already know today back then? That's why sackings need to happen. Obviously someone is either 1) Incompetent, 2) pressured or 3) being paid off to let this shit in and an example to future biosecurity officers needs to be made.

    From todays Australian Newspaper

Queensland’s seafood industry is reeling today after the highly contagious exotic disease white spot has been detected in wild prawns in Moreton Bay.

Just weeks after the last prawn farm in southern Queensland succumbed to the devastating disease, state Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne said white spot was more widespread than had been suspected.
Wild prawns in the Logan River, south of Brisbane — and next to the infected farms — were found to have had the disease.
The 24 samples that tested for white spot were in two different locations in Moreton Bay — near Deception Bay and the Redcliffe Peninsula.
They represent the most significant outbreak of the disease among wild prawns in Australia’s history.
The disease — which is not harmful to humans — is thought to have entered Australia in infected raw prawns brought into the country by unscrupulous importers.
Federal Department of Agriculture officials are under fire for not alerting Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, prawn farmers, Biosecurity Queensland or retailers of the known high rates of infection being identified in November last year.
Officials introduced tougher inspection measures and began testing in supermarkets last year when the high rates of white spot were detected.
Mr Byrne confirmed the results of the new test findings in a meeting of prawn farmers this morning.
The state industry is worth at $360 million.
The Queensland government had established a movement control order to prevent its spread.
“After seeing the impact of this disease on the prawn farming industry in the Logan River region, we are taking immediate steps to contain the risk of further spread,” he said.
“A movement control order for the Moreton Bay region is being established with immediate effect.
“It will be in place for three months to allow the government to contain any potential spread of the virus, conduct further testing and determine future action.
Local prawn farmers on the Logan River this year told The Australian they are “100 per cent certain” the virus, which has caused billions of dollars in damage to overseas prawn farming, was carried into the country by imported prawns.
Federal officials have said the transmission pathway is not yet “definitive”.
Until a tightening of biosecurity measures last year, importers “self-selected” virus-free packages from their shipments for testing by officials for white spot while their packages with alarming infection rates of 50 per cent were sold to supermarkets for human consumption.
Recreational fishermen who unknowingly used infected prawns as bait in the Logan River are suspected by the prawn farmers of providing the pathway to their crops, which rely on water from the river.
Mr Joyce has said he was not told until early January and that he acted immediately, however, federal Labor opposition spokesman Joel Fitzgibbon said the claim needed to be properly tested.

I just want to highlight this bit....... So the seafood industry and Govt have known about White Spot in the prawns for years and did nothing about it.... in fact did worse than nothing,, they sold the infected prawns for Human Consumption. disgraceful......... appalling ......... criminal..........

I really thought we were better than this, we are not a 3rd world country... or are we ?

I know first hand how these shoddy countries send sh1t to our shores and get away with it, and "we" bend over and take it, in a really strange and twisted way, I kind of put some blame on Supermarkets, they are the ones that started undercutting prices on butchers, bakers and most every other specialist shop, right down to the fish market, they import tonnes of this crap to keep the price low, and everyone from the fisherman to the seafood eating public will pay dearly for it now....

...but we buy it...same as the milk. If we (the great unwashed ) were 100% committed to local produce the supermarkets wouldn't sell it. We aren't. ..unfortunately.

And there in lies the real cause. want want want but won't pay pay pay. Couple this with governments endorsing FTA's with hidden agendas ( surely wasn't for the good of our nation) and here we are. Blame achieves nothing now - it just needs to be fixed.
